A tailored design system

What happens when a brand has difficulties maintaining consistency in its internal apps? We’re thrilled to reveal the answer: the birth of a tailored design system. Join us as we unveil our journey in crafting a design system for McDonald’s Portugal focused on the users to simplify their work and help them create “iconic” designs.

Here are the highlights:

The challenge

McDonald’s Portugal had several platforms for different areas, which caused inconsistencies and risked the creation of coherent digital experiences. We aimed to build a design system whose assets and conventions overcome these challenges.?

A new concept

We analyzed McDonald’s internal apps and leveraged their branding guidelines to craft a UI concept that included the new experience principles, the design system’s name (“Iconic Design System”), the visual language, and a new design prototype for one of their internal platforms.

Defining the system’s standards

We crafted guidelines for voice and tone, style, and components to ensure that McDonald’s design system empowers product teams to create simple and intuitive experiences while optimizing efficiency in their workflow.

Designing and developing

We designed the experience and features for two platforms. Additionally, we developed a cross-platform component library to streamline future work, checking each component’s functionalities and conducting tests to verify its performance. If they passed, we would finalize their implementation documentation.?

A lasting impact?

The system helps teams solve problems, improve design quality, and create a cohesive digital experience across different touchpoints. It will continue growing and evolving to meet McDonald’s needs.?
