Tailor: AI-Generated Newsletters

This is Generative Phil, where I try new AI tools to solve one of my real problems and give it a rating between 1 - 10 Evil Robot Overlords (10, of course, being so essential, it's a little scary).

I'm sorry for taking a few weeks off for a family vacation and VidCon without letting you know. I'm back on my regular schedule now!

I just spent two hours clearing out my personal e-mail inbox.

Two. Hours.

I was gone for a few weeks, so naturally, I fell behind, but this was too much.

I hit the 'Unsubscribe' button on about 20% of those e-mails. It doesn't seem to matter. The junk keeps coming.

I want my inbox filled with meaningful, personal emails, a few good offers from brands I like, and a couple of newsletters to keep me informed quickly.

I am still working on the first two, but I may have a solution for the third.

Enter Tailor , which promises an AI daily summary with the news that matters to me most.

Let's get started.

PROBLEM

I want information that is relevant to me, but I need more time.

I just counted, and I subscribe to 18 newsletters.

If I can cut that down to one recap, I'll save at least 30 minutes daily.

PROCESS

You can sign up with a Google login (SCORE!!!)

Then a quick intro to the platform as the ChatGPT for news, a click on 'Let's Get Started', then you get to pick your interests.

It appears the default options are made to show how deeply specific ("Cultivated Meat") or broad ("Fashion") you can be.

I chose:

  • Creator Economy
  • Generative AI for Entertainment
  • YouTube Trends
  • New Technology

That felt like enough for now, so I hit continue.

I then had the option to select when I read the news. I pick 6:30am, which is usually when I have the kids eating breakfast and I start plowing through my e-mail.

And that's it! The next prompt encourages me to download the app to 'read or listen to my news' or 'Continue'. I hit 'Continue'.

RESULTS

In near-real time, the first article popped up!

It definitely nailed my interest in 'Generative AI for Entertainment,' and the recap was clear and readable.

It took me a few minutes to read the story, then I scrolled down to the 'Researching new articles' animation.

And waited.

And waited.

After about 10 minutes, I realized nothing else was coming.

So I clicked on 'Podcast' to see if there was anything else.

When I play the 'Podcast,' there are two stories! When I return to the main page, there is only one. Strange.

The 'Podcast' is a male and female voice trading reading paragraphs, addressing each other in-between to sound like a news broadcast. It's fun, but it still sounds like two lifeless robots doing a parody of a human podcast.

Now, 15 minutes in, there is no second article on the main page. I'm calling it.

RATING

The concept of this technology is excellent, but I would have gotten information faster simply by reading my usual newsletters.

I'm trying to understand why it couldn't summarize new articles faster.

If I had just gone to TechCrunch, copied articles into ChatGPT, and asked for a summary, I would have gotten ten times as many results in the same amount of time with the same quality.

I like the podcast idea, but AI voices need to improve so it's easier to listen to.

That's why I'm giving Tailor three 'Evil Robot Overlords' out of ten. I want to see this product or a similar product work, but right now this product is unusable.

Thanks for reading! Subscribe so you never miss an issue!

And if you have pitches for what tech you'd like me to cover next, let me know in the comments.

You may or may not know that Jeff Bezos' first independent venture, back in the 80's in NYC, was publishing a daily newsletter about stock market info to an institutional investor audience. It selected and distilled corporate news and info from multiple sources into a single "exec summary" kind of thing tailored to the subscribers, every day. Highly manual process pulling from various news feeds and sources. I'm sure that experience led him to think, "there's gotta be a better way," and formed the seeds of his future ventures. After that, he packed up his Subaru and drove to Seattle to found Amazon.

That’s definitely a use-case begging for a solution. However, I suspect that any startup that tackles it will soon be replaced by whatever resident AI we use or end up with on our devices. Whether that’s Siri or Co-Pilot or something else, they’ll soon be able to see all the newest issues of the newsletters we subscribe to and instantly summarise the highlights.
