Greetings,
Happy Summer Solstice! Summer is officially here and many of you are likely packing for your first visit to Tahoe since ski season. Recognizing the excitement to get back up to our recreational paradise, I'd like to highlight two activities that should be on your agenda - hiking and beaching.
On Father's Day I did a beautiful hike with my family up Shirley Canyon at Squaw. I have lived in Tahoe for almost 15 years and can't believe I had never done this hike...I highly recommend it! The first mile or so of the trek follows a creek and features some beautiful waterfalls, followed by a field of granite slabs. After passing Shirley Lake, we hiked up the slope to High Camp at Squaw. We enjoyed the view from the deck with a cold drink before riding the (free) tram down to the Village at Squaw. It was a perfect day! Here's a link to details of this hike: Shirley Canyon Trail.
For beaches, there are so many options, each offering something different. With the help of our lodging partners at Invited Home, we have compiled a list of some favorite beaches of Lake Tahoe:
Sand Harbor Lake Tahoe
Sand Harbor is the quintessential Tahoe beach. The expansive sandy strip provides the setting for amazing views of the Lake. There’s something for every member of your family or group at this 55-acre, designated state park. In addition to playing on the beach and swimming in the Lake all day, hike any of its scenic trails within the adjacent forest. For a full list of hikes that crisscross the area, click here. Take to the water by launching your boat from any of the convenient docks, or rent a kayak from Sand Harbor Rentals. And if you’re visiting in July or August, you won't find a better backdrop for a performance by the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival. Click Here for more details and directions.
Tahoe City Commons Beach
I participated in a swim race here last weekend and was reminded of what a fun beach and park this is for families with young kids, offering a great playground and mellow sandy beach. It's a great spot to combine some shopping, dining and beach time. Sundayevenings, check out the Summer Concert Series. It’s also a perfect place for barbecues and picnics, and to rent a water vessel to maximize your scenic views. More Details and Directions.
Moon Dunes Beach
If you’re just looking for the beach basics (and a little privacy too), head to Moon Dunes Beach in Tahoe Vista. Although there are no facilities and very limited parking, you will find is some of the most pristine sand anywhere around the Lake. When you want to get away from your getaway, you can’t do much better than spending a day here. More Details and Directions.
Chimney Beach
A couple miles south of Sand Harbor lies a secluded, hiker’s paradise. A scenic trail among the trees provides access Chimney Beach, with glimpses of the lake and beach beckoning you along the way. Play a game of fetch with your canine pal (it’s dog friendly) and take off those shoes to experience the sand. (A word of warning, however, should you have the kids in tow: Secret Cove, south of Chimney Beach, is clothing optional.) To get to Chimney Beach (so named for the old stone chimney that still stands), drive about 2.5 miles south of Sand Harbor on Nevada State Route 28 and you'll see the trailhead and parking area. Plan to get here early, since parking is limited. The 2.4 mile hike down toward the lake takes about 20 minutes and is suitable for all skill levels. If you go in the offseason, it's possible to have this beautiful beach all to yourself. More Details and Directions.
Tahoe Vista Recreation Area
A local favorite in North Lake Tahoe for its conveniently shaded boat launch and rental facilities, this beach area is also a great family destination. Consisting of more than 800 feet of lakeshore sand, this is the perfect place to get a new perspective of the Lake itself. Spend the day exploring the plaza, hit the trails for a guided tour or the lake with your watercraft of choice from Tahoe Adventure Company. It's also a picturesque place to host your next event, such as a wedding or family reunion. More Details and Directions.
King's Beach
As the largest North Lake Tahoe public beach with nearly 700 feet of shoreline, King’s Beach is where you go to be seen in the sun and enjoy a variety of water sport activities as wide as the beach itself. More Details and Directions.

MY TOP PICKS
Award-Winning Lakefront - I recently toured this 6-bedroom, 6.5-bath, 6,545 square foot lakefront home near Homewood and was reminded what a special place this is. This three-story award winner features and open concept main floor, connecting the kitchen, dining and living rooms to the outdoors. The exterior features that authentic Tahoe feel, with natural bark and granite, but its plush interior is loaded with modern amenities. Glass doors fold away, opening twenty feet across, onto a wraparound deck overlooking Lake Tahoe complete with built-in barbeque and pizza oven. The master suite features a private deck, cozy sitting area with fireplace and spa-like bath with his and her built-in dressing armoires. The lower level has plenty of room for entertaining and includes a full bar, billiards, sauna, library and wine cellar, complete with tasting room, accessible only by a hidden door concealed as a bookcase. So cool! Escape it all behind a private gate, and enjoy the level grounds with lawn and stately cedar trees, 100 feet of shoreline on Lake Tahoe, four buoys and a pier shared with the neighbor. Given the complete lack of inventory for lakefronts and the fact that this is being offered at $17,900,000, I'm certain this will sell this summer.
Luxury on the Truckee River - This custom 5-bedroom, 6.5-bath, 4,744 square foot home is a one-of-a-kind riverfront home. The craftsmanship of Bruce Olson Construction is exquisite. There are high-end finishes throughout the entire home, from reclaimed granite flooring, custom doors and windows, to bronze hardware. Its functional design encourages comfortable living and entertaining. There's a separate studio over the garage with a full kitchen and bathroom, which allows for further flexibility or income opportunity. The private setting and big level riverfront yard allows for true indoor/outdoor living. The location on the Truckee River close to Squaw and right between Truckee and Tahoe City make this an ideal Tahoe retreat.
