To Tag or Not To Tag - Is it even a question?

In the ever-evolving digital landscape, social media platforms like LinkedIn have become crucial for personal branding, professional networking, and showcasing thought leadership. One feature of LinkedIn that often sparks debate is the use of 'tags'. Are they a help or hindrance? A sign of savvy social media usage or a desperate cry for attention? Let's delve into the matter.

The Power of Tags

Tags, in essence, are clickable links that group related content together. They are a way to categorize posts or articles, making them more discoverable to users interested in that particular topic. On LinkedIn, tagging (also known as @mentioning) an individual or a company can lead to increased visibility, engagement, and potentially extend your content's reach beyond your immediate network.

Using tags wisely can:

  1. Draw Attention: By tagging relevant people or companies, you're alerting them to your post, potentially leading to interaction, sharing, or engagement on their part.
  2. Boost Engagement: A tagged post will likely be seen by a larger audience, which can increase comments, likes, and shares.
  3. Strengthen Connections: Tagging someone in a post can show them you value their input or appreciate their work, helping to build stronger professional relationships.

The Tagging Dilemma

Despite these benefits, many LinkedIn users shy away from using tags. The reasons are numerous, but a common theme is the perception of trying too hard or appearing inauthentic. Here are some reasons why:

  1. Fear of Appearing Desperate: Tagging, especially when done excessively, can be seen as an attempt to piggyback on the popularity or influence of others. This can potentially reflect poorly on your personal or professional brand.
  2. Intrusiveness: Tagging someone in a post sends them a notification. When done without a valid reason, this can be seen as intrusive or annoying.
  3. Relevance Concerns: If a post is not directly relevant to the tagged individual or company, it may come across as spammy or irrelevant, diluting the value of your content.

Balancing the Act

So, how can you strike a balance between harnessing the power of tags and avoiding the pitfalls? Here are a few best practices:

  1. Relevance is Key: Only tag individuals or companies that are directly relevant to your post. This could be because they are mentioned in the content, they contributed to the ideas presented, or you genuinely believe they will find value in it.
  2. Less is More: Avoid the temptation to over-tag. While it might seem like a shortcut to greater visibility, excessive tagging can dilute your message and annoy your audience.
  3. Reciprocity Rules: Tagging should not be a one-way street. Engage with those who tag you (where relevant) and build mutually beneficial relationships.

It seems like "to tag or not to tag" isn't really the question. Rather, it's about how to tag effectively and authentically. Used wisely, tags can be a powerful tool for extending your reach and deepening your connections on LinkedIn. Used poorly, they can harm your reputation and alienate your network. As with all tools, thoughtful and considerate use is the key to success.

Thanks for the share! I'm wondering if you can clarify whether Linkedin will increase the visibility of my post to the network of the person I tagged? It seems to be a great and sneaky way to push my post to someone else's audience?

It was really interesting to see just how bad the various AI Image Generators were at incorporating the hashtag symbol/number sign (#) - I ended up giving up and just adding them myself in photoshop!
