Tactical Empathy Encourages Reciprocity

As a coach, one of the most important skills I bring to the table is the ability to empathize. Empathy allows me to understand my clients' perspectives, feelings, and needs, which in turn enables me to help them achieve their goals and make lasting changes in their lives.
But empathy is not just a passive emotion, it can also be used strategically to encourage reciprocity and build trust with clients. This is what I call "tactical empathy."
Tactical empathy means using empathy in a purposeful and intentional way to build a deeper connection with my clients. This can include active listening, reflective questioning, and being fully present and engaged in the conversation. By showing that I truly care and understand them, they are more likely to trust me and be open to my guidance and feedback.

For example, when working with a client who is struggling with stress and anxiety, I use tactical empathy by actively listening to their concerns and reflecting on their feelings. I might say something like, "It sounds like you're feeling really overwhelmed right now. Can you tell me more about what's going on for you?" By showing that I understand and care about their experience, the client is more likely to trust me and be open to my advice and support.
Tactical empathy also encourages reciprocity, which means that the client is more likely to be open and responsive to guidance and feedback. This creates a positive feedback loop, where trust and openness leads to more effective coaching, which in turn leads to even greater trust and openness. Empathy is a powerful tool for coaches, and when used strategically, it can encourage reciprocity and build trust with clients. By using tactical empathy, coaches can create a deeper connection with their clients, which leads to more effective coaching and lasting change.
