Taco Bell X Doritos Perfect Collaboration
In 2012, Taco Bell and Doritos teamed up, to create Doritos Locos Tacos - a tasty taco with a shell made from Nacho Cheese Doritos and filled with yummy Taco Bell. However, the idea of using Doritos for the taco shell started in 2009, when Taco Bell's CEO, Greg Creed, sought a fresh menu twist, leading to the flavorful collaboration we now know.
Doritos Locos Tacos faced a year-long test in three cities: Bakersfield, Fresno, and Toledo. Although the initial release was limited, the excitement sparked by those early tastings spread rapidly, and In 2012, Taco Bell introduced the Nacho Cheese Doritos Locos Taco everywhere across the US. The product became a huge hit, with about one in every three orders including this delicious item. The popularity soared to such heights that Taco Bell had to hire 15,000 more employees and set up four new production lines at the Doritos taco shell factory to meet demand.
In 2013, the menu got even more exciting with the introduction of Cool Ranch and Fiery Doritos Locos Tacos. Taco Bell, not willing to let the Doritos Locos excitement fade away, went a step further by creating tortilla chips flavored like Locos Tacos.
However, the journey to innovation and success for Doritos Locos Tacos was not without contention. In 2014, a group of former Taco Bell advertising interns made a bold claim, asserting that Doritos Locos Tacos were invented back in 1995 during their internship. Andrea Watt, along with three other college students, namely Mark Rader and Roy Brown, put forth their case, and presented extensive evidence, including CVS-length receipts and pictures of the original mockups, to prove their point.
