Tackling waste and driving change – a priority for Liberty Two Degrees

South Africa is recognised as the third highest waste generator in sub-Saharan Africa, producing 0.98 kg of waste per person per day – 32% above the global average.

According to a ?Department of Environmental Affairs study, over 42 million cubic meters of general waste is generated across the country annually, with the largest proportion coming from Gauteng at 42%, followed by Western Cape at 20%. ?As we observe national Recycling Week from 16 – 21 September, these figures underline the need for real change.

At Liberty Two Degrees (L2D), sustainability is central to our operations, and we have made remarkable strides in reducing waste to landfill diversion over the past three years, with waste diversion averaging at more than 90%.

We are committed to environmental stewardship and understand the importance of working with partners. In line with the World Wild Fund’s 4-Step Blueprint to tackle plastic pollution, L2D has adopted best practices for managing waste.L2D has partnered with Waste Plan, and pledged to divert all non-recyclable plastic waste to Alternative Waste Treatment plants as the opportunities arise. ?

Sustainability is a joint effort, and it is through partnerships like these that we strive to implement innovative solutions, leverage collective expertise and contribute to a more sustainable and resilient future for our communities and the planet.

Recycling is a significant contributor in supporting responsible waste management practices. However, recycling alone is not enough. We must advocate for system-wide change that prioritises waste reduction and the circular economy. This Recycling Week, we encourage all organisation and individuals to join us in making a difference. Together, we can build a future where waste is minimised, and resources are reused effectively for the betterment of our planet.
