Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Combating Leprosy and TB

AI has the potential to be a game-changer in the fight against Leprosy and TB. However, addressing the challenges and ensuring responsible implementation is crucial to maximize its benefits. AI can improve diagnoses by supporting analyses of chest X-rays for TB and skin lesions for Leprosy, potentially leading to faster and more accurate diagnoses, especially in the hard-to-reach areas where Access, Availability and Affordability are the biggest challenges. It can also help in treatment responses and adherence by efficient planning for better outcomes, tools such as the Large Language Model (LLM) like GPT-4, and Gemini can reduce stigma related to diseases by creating effective content for Advocacy, Communication and Social Mobilization. At the same time, data privacy, cost-effectiveness and ethical considerations are the grey areas which need to be addressed prior to AI’s full-fledged use. Human expertise will remain crucial and AI should be seen as a tool to empower healthcare workers, for faster outcomes while implementing national programs. GLRA India has participated in a workshop “Artificial Intelligence in Public Health” organized by the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai for a better understanding of the topic and to interact with eminent experts from the field.

Farewell, but not Forgotten: Reflecting on the Inheritance

At the end of each project, we have seen hundreds of employees are switching over by finding new avenues, but each leaving a legacy behind, left with a lasting impression. Even though for a short tenure, their contributions continue to influence us and remind us of their dedication. In the collaboration on short-term projects, strong bonds form among team and the project comes to a close, bidding farewell touches our emotions, especially for those who have been frequently coordinating, being helpful, and positive throughout. Their departure leaves an impact, their positive influences stay, guiding us forward and motivating to excel in our accomplishments. Two of our projects concluded in March and April 2024, Project Axshya Plus in Madhya Pradesh and in West Bengal and Project WASH MY EYES in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal. We remain thankful to the team involved in both projects for their outstanding performance and commitment, which have brought about lasting changes in the lives of thousands and contributed to our success. We wish all the team members the very best in their future endeavours.

The Vital Role of MEAL in Public Health

In the public health initiatives, Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability, and Learning (MEAL) stands as a beacon of efficacy and impact. At the heart of every successful health intervention lies the ability to measure progress, evaluate effectiveness, ensure accountability, and continuously learn and adapt. MEAL isn't just a set of procedures; it's the compass guiding us towards tangible outcomes and sustainable change. Imagine a world where every health intervention is meticulously monitored, rigorously evaluated and transparently held accountable. This is the promise of MEAL. Whether it's combating the scourge of leprosy and tuberculosis, providing vital humanitarian assistance, or ensuring access to clean water and sanitation through WASH initiatives, MEAL serves as the cornerstone of success. In essence, MEAL isn't just about collecting numbers; it's about transforming lives. It empowers us to identify what works, what doesn't, and most importantly, why. As we navigate the complexities of public health, let us embrace MEAL as our steadfast companion, guiding us towards a healthier, more equitable future for all.
