Tackling Change

Moving into our new home in February, our world has been upside down. All the little things we take for granted in our lives were immediately flipped upside down.

On average it rains 20 days a year in Queensland. It was an almighty downpour on our moving day!

For the first time in weeks, I sit at my desk with a Blend 43 at my side. My son sits next to me on the floor where he is playing a fishing game. it's 5.58am.

So close to normal that it's almost perfect.

Behind me are a pile of moving boxes to still be unpacked, but right now, I'll ignore those and focus on this blissful moment of normalcy.

I reflected recently on how important routine is to our management of time and self. I found it amazing how quickly disorganisation spun everything off-axis. It actually really caught me off-guard, as I consider myself fairly resourceful and as someone that enjoys camping, I don't mind roughing it!

The difference is the family that relies on you. It's not to hard to take care of your own basic necessities, but when you need to help take care of your family and their needs, it quickly becomes more challenging.

I have seen the same thing in recent weeks at the office. I have needed to be flexible with my working hours and have been coming and going at odd hours. I have needed others to step up in my absence, to help shoulder the responsibility.

I have seen the state of flux that causes.

Clear lines of communication and clear routine are what I come back to. Without a process, without guidelines, it all falls apart. Staff are confused and inefficient. Frustration abounds.

However, with continued guidance over the past month and a few solid nudges of course correction, in the past few days, I have noticed the change taking place.

I have seen the acceptance of responsibility and the opportunity to step up being taken.

It's a rough ride to get through change, but if it's positive and guided while you batten down for the immediate beating the storm will bring, when the clouds clear, it's a brand new day.

Always a bumpy road at points. That's why you drive a cruiser wagon, fits plenty of people, goes into all terrain!! Sure you'll be back on the bitumen in no time :)?
