Just before the end of the toughest interview of my 20-something year old life, *Joe asked me to sell him a shirt. “What?” My brain screamed. “What in the world does a shirt have to do with an HR Manager job?” Thankfully, my mouth was more disciplined than my brain and it maintained its composure. The mouth answered, “What kind of shirt?”
The interview ended rather quickly after that, and I knew I had blown it. My brain really blamed my mouth for screwing it all up.

This statement is so true that a 2019 LinkedIn Study of over 5,000 talent professionals from around the world found that 89% of bad hires typically lack soft skills. In fact, the study also found that 92% of leaders say that soft skills matter as much or more than hard skills.

???????? ????????????: Soft skills are non-technical skills related to how you interact with colleagues, how you solve problems, and how you manage your work. They are HOW you do the job and thus, can be difficult to teach since they are behavioral. Behavioral based questions require a candidate to demonstrate a particular competency through recalling a specific, past experience.

How do you know if their response to your behavioral based question a good one? Look for and prompt these 4 things:
?? ?????????????????? – Does the candidate paint the specific event or situation they were faced with or are they providing a generalized situation such as “whenever I am faced with X.” Generalized responses may be an indication of a lack of real experience with that type of situation.
?? ???????? – Does the candidate paint the goal they are working towards?
?? ???????????? – What steps did they take to solve the problem or to get to the desired outcome? Watch for generalized answers about what the team or group did. Ask for specifics. “Exactly what did you do?”
?? ???????????? – What was the outcome of their actions? Their answer will demonstrate what the candidate values and what they overlook. For example, based on their response, did they value that the issue was resolved quickly while overlooking accuracy, or did they value both?

Situational questions require a candidate to tell you how they would handle a hypothetical situation that is based on the challenges associated with the job. You get to see real time how they would work out in your role.

- Let’s assume you have a project team member that is popular and well liked. Unfortunately, she keeps missing her activity goals, weekly. Every time you meet, she says she will really focus and meet her activity goals the next week, but she keeps falling short. She always has a good excuse. How would you handle this team member’s poor performance?

*As a manager, ensure that you assess for both HARD and SOFT skills, and that you ask both BEHAVIORAL BASED and SITUATIONAL questions.
