I had been in my job for about 6 months and in that short amount of time, I had undeniably smashed my goals. So, picture me walking into my manager’s office, expecting showers of praise and money, only to be hit with a score of 3 out of 5 and a mediocre merit increase.

????, ?? ??????????, ?????????? ?????????? ???? ?????????? ???? ???? ????????. ??????, ???????????? ??????????.


?????????????????? ????????????????????????

???????? ???????????? ?????????? ?????????? ?????????????????? ????????????????????????, ???????? ?????????? ?????????? ???? ???????? ????????-????????????????????. Yet, emotional intelligence encompasses 4 pillars, all of equal importance.

?? ????????-?????????????????? and ????????-???????????????????? which have to do with SELF, and,

?? ???????????? ?????????????????? and ???????????????????????? ???????????????????? which have to do with OTHERS.

You see, to be a great leader of people, we have to embody all 4.


???? ?????????? ?? ??????, ?????????????? ???? ???? ??????????????’?? ????????????, ???????????? ??????????????????????????. Weeping because I had put my whole 23-year-old self into my work. ?????????? ?? ?????? ??????????????, ???? ?????????????? ???????? ???????????????? ?????? ???? ?????????????????? ???????? ?????????? ?????? ?????????? ????????. The only thing that had mattered for months, was my work. And for what? A mediocre review? I didn’t have the words to express my overwhelming feelings. So, I cried.

It's really uncomfortable to watch someone else cry, so it's easier to excuse yourself, excuse the other person or judge them negatively. But the way my manager handled the moment was career defining. I will never forget her response.

?????? ??????, ?????? ???????????????? ?????????? ???????? ???????? ???? ?????????????? ???? ???? ??????????????????, ???????????????????? ?????? ????????, while declaring that emotions have no place at work. But she was smart and emotionally intelligent, so she handled it differently.

In that moment, she flexed the ?????????? ???????????????????? ???? ???????????? ??????????????????, in the context of Emotional Intelligence. Empathy, Service, and Contextual Awareness.


?????????????? ???? ???????????????????? ????, ?????? ???????????????? ???? ???????????????? ???????? ????????????????. She recognized that I CRIED because I CARED. Because of her reaction I became even more engaged and engrossed in my work.

?? I voluntarily missed even more parties and happy hours, (?????? ???????? ?? ???? ???????????????????????? ???????? - ???? ?????? ???? ????????????)

?? produced even better results and smashed her goals.

??I became one of her “high-performing’ employees and received a promotion about 8 months later from her. ??????-??????. ?????? ?????? ?????? ?? ??????.
