The TAB Insider

5 December 2024 - Penned by Yohann Ifrah, Junior Business Development Manager.

Welcome to the TAB Insider, a weekly LinkedIn newsletter brought to you by the TAB sales team - Nick Russell , Andy Reid , Martyn Evans , Sophie Meller and Aron Schechter . We're here to share our top tips, highlight our best deals, and celebrate our brokers.

Having recently earned my third promotion at TAB , I'm excited to be writing this newsletter as TAB's newest junior business development manager.

Today, I'll share some insights into my journey, my most memorable deal, and a bit about myself. If you have any deals in the pipeline that you'd like to discuss, please reach out, I'd be happy to help you navigate them.

From rookie to rising: My top lesson in sales

I'm young and relatively new to the industry, with just three years of experience. I won't pretend to be an expert telling you how to do your job. Instead, I want to share my biggest learning, a perspective that might resonate with newcomers looking to break into the field, and maybe even challenge some of you seasoned experts who might be set in your ways!

In my three years of experience, my biggest lesson is that to succeed, you need to love what you do and make every second count. It's not always about reaching the destination but about embracing the journey along the way.

My most memorable deal: The crown coin

One of the most memorable enquiries I’ve had so far is a transaction centred around a unique coin created by The East India Company to commemorate Queen Elizabeth's reign. Valued at an impressive £14 million and securely housed in a private vault in Mayfair. The potential borrowers approached TAB wanting to raise funds for a 20-year lease for their London shop, using this artefact as collateral.

The proposed structure was as innovative as the asset itself. The borrowers would grant access control of the vault deposit locker while retaining the ability to showcase the coin to prospective customers. They were willing to assign the insurance policy in TABs favour, demonstrating their commitment to mitigating potential risks. Despite the deals potential and the borrowers creative approach, it wasn’t one we ended up progressing.

This case was super interesting and shows the kind of unique challenges we might face on a day-to-day basis. While not every unusual enquiry turns into a completion, each represents a chance to explore the boundaries of financial innovation.

My favourite part of the role

When it's not dealing with quirky enquiries that get me thinking, my favourite part of the role is structuring deals and finding solutions that work for both the client and TAB. I enjoy navigating challenges and developing innovative ways to structure a loan that meets everyone's needs.?

What sets us apart is our team and collaborative culture. At TAB, we have access to our key decision-makers across multiple departments, from underwriting and senior management to treasury. We're a solutions-oriented lender, not a problems-focused one, so this approach, combined with our open communication and ability to immediately connect with the right person who can help, means we can progress deals much faster and more efficiently.?

Broker hero

I want to take a moment to highlight the brokers who bring incredible deals to our team at TAB. This month, I'm excited to spotlight Jonathan B. Horn from Prince Capital Advisors .

Working with Jonathan has been a pleasure. He’s highly knowledgeable, understands TAB’s processes, and brings great cases to the table. We’ve already completed two deals together last month, with another set to close this month.

Jonathan's professional approach and strategic deal-finding abilities exemplify the kind of broker relationships we value at TAB. His commitment to understanding our requirements and presenting well-structured opportunities sets him apart!

Before we wrap up, I want to share a bit more about myself so you can get to know me better.

My promise to brokers

I commit to giving my absolute best to ensure every deal reaches completion. However, I'm also realistic—sometimes a deal simply doesn't align with TAB's criteria, and that's okay. We won't force a square peg into a round hole.

Three things always on my desk

  1. iPad and pen – To jot down anything that pops into my mind or update my to-do list
  2. Charger – Essential to keep my phone powered for calls and meetings throughout the day
  3. Water – Staying hydrated keeps me sharp and focused

Best career moment so far:

My first deal completion was magic! I’ll never forget the excitement of it, and let’s just say the commission didn’t last very long.

Wisdom that guides me:

  • "Enjoy the little things, as they make everything easier."
  • "A deal will complete when it’s ready to complete." - Duncan Kreeger
