Q: Artificial Intelligence (AI) has greatly impacted countless industries, especially in the healthcare sector. However, AI in healthcare is a new and challenging field requiring much precise expertise. What made you believe and motivated you to pursue a career in AI in healthcare? ??

Nam: With the ability to automate and process big data, AI has been posing a considerable impact on the medical field to help diagnose and treat diseases faster and make predictions about the development of diseases and better disease prevention solutions.??

I believe in the ability of AI in healthcare and pursue this career because I want to contribute to the development of the medical field in Vietnam, my country. Moreover, AI will make Vietnam's health sector more progressive in assisting doctors and medical professionals in their work and improving people's quality of life. ?

In addition, the use of AI can gradually reduce costs for the healthcare sector and make medical services more available, especially for economically disadvantaged people. ?

Q: What challenges did you face when engaging in medical AI for diagnostic imaging that brought you opportunities and lessons???

Nam: The biggest hindrance when systemizing AI for medical imaging is collecting and preparing organic data since resolving many high-quality datasets to train the AI models takes time.??

Besides, it is essential to equip yourself with expertise in image processing techniques, data analysis, and how medical devices work. Implementing AI models for medical imaging requires strict and precise control to ensure the safety and effectiveness of these techniques in practice.??

Along with being cautious and serious, I learned how to analyze medical data and create AI models that adhere to the exacting standards of the healthcare sector as well as how to work with medical specialists to guarantee the efficiency and accuracy of AI models.??

The aligned integration with existing software in the hospital helps me improve my knowledge about the overall system to operate the hospital.??

Huynh Minh Thanh – Lead Scientist of DrAid? : "To meet FDA's standards, it is necessary to work with medical universities and doctors to label the data, check progress, and address any differing opinions among doctors at the medical university" ??

Q: The US Food and Drug Administration imposes strict regulations on medical products. Being approved by them is a significant milestone for VinBrain to get into the US market. Can you share the difficulties you have to deal with to bring our products to the world and secure FDA approval? ?

Thanh: There were mainly three challenges. ?

The biggest challenge was writing FDA reports in their standard format, as they had to meet stringent requirements to ensure product safety and effectiveness. One of them was that the report's data had to be adherent. ??

For example, the data must be anonymized, over the age of 22, and representative of the American people. ?

The writing had to follow FDA standards, such as providing detailed information about the assistive scanner and information such as the software development process and the AI modeling process that FDA deemed appropriate. ?

Secondly, VinBrain had to ensure that the product met the strict requirements of the FDA. Specifically, the requirements for the model's accuracy had to be high, all scales had to be over 90% accurate, the labeling doctors had to be trained in the US, and the data used to check and train the model had to be detailed and typical for Americans. ?

In addition, to meet FDA standards, the VinBrain team had "lived and worked according to US Time Zone." The team worked with medical universities (such as Cornell University) to have their doctors annotate, audit progress and address any differing opinions among them to meet FDA requirements. Meanwhile, we had to work with US consultants to answer FDA questions. ??

All these efforts required a great deal of action on the part of the team. But ultimately, they were critical in ensuring that the product met the FDA's stringent requirements for consumer safety and efficacy. ???

Q: What did you learn most from the process from conception to the FDA's approval of our product???

Thanh: I was in awe of how the FDA monitors their data quality since they go beyond determining whether the AI on the test data set is accurate. They also want to know whose doctors marked which test data sets, if those doctors had their training in the US, and what the general medical opinion is regarding that dataset.??

The team's ability to adjust to the FDA's stringent restrictions is what's most marvelous, though. The team contacts the consultant frequently for them to provide timely advice to doctors in the US. ??

Q: How did you feel when our?DrAid??product was cleared by the FDA???

Linh: I was overwhelmed with mixed feelings when the FDA approved?DrAid??for Radiology v1. I nervously opened it in the early morning of Sep 2 to discover the FDA approval announcement. After thoroughly reading the email, I realized that the VinBrain team's effort over the course of four years when they first began to develop the?DrAid??product have paid off and I was so overwhelmed with excitement and pride?that I read and reread the emails. ?

I am pleased and appreciative because DrAid? has become the first?AI software?in Southeast Asia for chest X-ray diagnostics with features suggestive of pneumothorax to be cleared per FDA requirements, making Vietnam one of the six nations to receive this recognition. ??

However, I also feel a bit of pressure because the team has to ensure that the product is safe and effective in real-life usage. But this worry is only fleeting, as our product design, development process, and quality all meet the strictest standards such as FDA and ISO 13485. Furthermore, the product is widely used and highly appreciated by doctors in over 100 hospitals both domestically and internationally.?

Q: Could you please tell me the upcoming plan and roadmap to get new FDA standards for DrAid?? ?

After receiving FDA approval for the first time last September, we are finalizing the profile for the new DrAid? Liver Cancer CT and ready to launch in mid-2023.

Although the process is fraught with difficulties, VinBrain team is committed to doing our best on each product that we have put out. We have set a goal to have at least one product getting FDA approval this year, and we currently keep putting in much efforts to reach our desired target. ??
