An ideal work environment is one that allows an excellent working system to flourish.
As a leader, your ideas and way of working cannot be effective in the wrong environment.?
Given your position, it is likely that you have found yourself in teams or organizations where you just felt strangled and stifled. The overall mission was clear to you and everyone else but you just couldn't flow with your teammates, it's also possible that the organization was not quite clear about what exactly they expected from you or they just communicated their expectations poorly.
At this point you are probably wondering how you can avoid that, as a leader yourself, you have targets before you, it's in your interest and the interest of your company that you produce excellent results consistently. A working environment that looks anything like what was described above can be very draining,in such an environment sub-optimal results are the norm.?
To create a predictably successful and highly efficient work environment, you should know about one of the most important components that foster the ideal work environment.?
Making Your Vision Plain...
Most teams you've been on or led yourself had the "vision" of attaining certain goals, in cases where you ended up achieving those goals you will find that a suitable work process was established consciously or subconsciously, things just seemed to click.
We now know that making the vision plain is a core component to achieving our goals, the next step is to discover how we go about making our vision plain, and how we can communicate effectively so that our team produces excellent results consistently.
In this post, we have outlined 5 practical steps you can take to create that excellent work environment in any team or organization you find yourself.
WRITE DOWN THE VISION
The first step to making any vision plain is to make it visible on a plain surface.
This is an important step to follow if you want to deliver your tasks and projects successfully.?
You can use a vision board, write it on the walls, on paper,on boards, make it the home screen of your computer, anywhere that is convenient but make sure your vision is visible.
Your vision should be before your team at all times.?
There should be no mistake about your expectations, ambitions, dreams, and targets.
?Your vision for any project should be written so clearly and simply that even if a visitor looks upon it, he feels galvanized to act towards the achievement of those goals. Pictures work just as well as written texts.
Here is an idea for the next time you write down your team's goals:
Next time you brief your team on the objectives and targets you must meet, allow them to be involved in creating the vision board.
That has the power to change anyone's mindset from "There is this thing I have to do at work” to “We have a project to execute and we must execute it in the best possible way”.
The vision, objectives, and goals must become theirs just as much as it belong to you and your organization.
?Allowing your team to get involved in the vision or goal-setting process makes it easier to convince them of your way of working, your vision board should boldly say?
“THIS IS OUR GOAL, THIS IS US AND WE CAN DO IT”.
?Your vision board should contain personal touches from everyone on the team, little trinkets, old articles, and pieces of cloth. Anything of sentimental value.
?
The point is that your vision board should make meaning and resonate deeply with your team and its values.
BREAK IT DOWN
Now you have written the vision plainly everyone loves it.?
It's time to assign responsibility, here your ability to assign tasks to each member of your team by skill set and temperament is pivotal.
?Make it clear from the get-go exactly who is doing what and very importantly when and how their work is to be delivered.
?Take questions from them, think of possible problems, and brainstorm solutions together, this serves to create a sense of community in your team.?
You want to emphasize that it's their project as much as it is yours, no one should be left behind. In every team some are more vocal than others, always allow the less vocal members of your team to express themselves, it makes the rest of the team see you as a compassionate and responsible figure.
ESTABLISH YOUR WAY OF WORKING
Great leaders in every field have their way of working, the way you work as a leader is really up to you, however for maximum productivity, you must have your team working towards the same thing at the same pace.
Know that each member of your team will have their preferred working habits.
?As a leader you must set the standard, there are things that are acceptable and things that are unacceptable.?
You must set deadlines and requirements for any project to be carried out.?
The previous two steps were about creating the feeling that the project is a joint responsibility.
?Now you need to assert your leadership on the team, an environment that is too light-hearted with no system of accountability cannot yield excellence.
In as much as the collective effort of your team is necessary for achieving your goals, you are the team leader.
The success or failure of the project is ultimately your responsibility.
That fact must be ingrained into each member of your team, setting the work standard is your right and responsibility.
SELL YOUR WAY OF WORKING
?
You may not have heard this before.
?You need to make your team believe in your way of working.
?It's a collective vision, they know what to do, and they understand that you are the leader.?
Please let them know your way.
?You are the leader, the steps to take must be clear in your head, you should know the outcome of doing things in the way you are suggesting.?
Make them see the relationship between your way of working and your collective goal.
?Remember to take useful suggestions and implement them.?
?Don't allow anyone to intimidate you.?
Sometimes a team member may want to set the pace, especially if they feel they should be leading.?
Show that you are confident in your skills and process, display your talent and show them why you are leading instead of them. Doing that stumps any potential uprising.
SMASH YOUR GOALS
Now you have successfully created an efficient working system for your goals to thrive, just smash them! Don't hold back, galvanize your team into action and reach those targets, bring that vision board from an illustration on the wall to a reality.?
Motivate your team at all times, provide useful pointers, and reward excellence and commitment to the way of working by praising exemplary behavior.
?So, those are our 5 tips for creating the ideal work environment, as you know nothing works well without adequate implementation, so it is important to implement these steps bearing in mind your own unique set of skills and the skills of your team.?
