System Integrator as Solution Sellers

I have been working in the home automation field for 15 years now, initially involved in new product development, and recently in sales and marketing, assisting companies in expanding their business. The fundamental role of smart home professionals, or System Integrators is widely recognized as a driving force in the industry, still the literature on these key players is limited. This article is my contribution in filling this gap.
First, who is a System Integrator? A System Integrator is a company, often one-person, that specializes in bringing different home automation components together into a whole, and ensuring that those subsystems work together. This can be seen as a verticalization from products to services, and it is rooted in the System Integrator solution selling business model, a customer-centric business model based on providing complete systems that guarantee a solution to the customer's problem. For System Integrators, the adoption of this model implies working backwards starting from the customer's needs to end at products and solutions aimed at satisfying those needs. Customers that choose to install home automation systems, they are not simply purchasing a system, but a bundle of benefits over time. This customer-centric perspective underlines the importance of the role of System Integrators in the landscape of integrated solutions. System Integrators organize their activities around the needs of specific customers, rather than limiting their business model in terms of product attribute.
In its pure form, a System Integrator (aka SI) is the single prime contractor responsible for designing, integrating externally sourced products and services into a system for an individual customer. In this way, SIs focuses on the component integration task, while coordinating the activities of many external suppliers to create value for their customers. The reason to be of Systems Integrators lies in identifying ways to create value for customers by integrating ever-new products into their solutions. Where often the products are not necessarily designed to work together.
The feelings of homeowners are constantly changing and their demand for increasingly up-to-date and complex solutions is growing. SIs incorporating technologies, products and specialized services are more than simply assemblers. They are responsible for the overall design of the system, the selection and coordination of a network of suppliers, the integration of components and the development of the technological knowledge necessary for future support of the system.
As the preferences of homeowners evolve and their demand for sophisticated solutions grows, SIs incorporating technologies, products and specialized services are more than simply assemblers. They take charge of the overall system design, the selection and coordination of a network of suppliers, the integration of components, and the development of the technological knowledge necessary for future system support.
In essence, this article seeks to emphasize the role of SIs in shaping the landscape of home automation, as architects of customized solutions that meet the dynamic needs of homeowners.
