The "System" approach to Happy Employees!
"The results of any Process comes from the System not the people..." Dr. W. Edwards Deming. In order to apply the system approach to people, we must first decide what is the desired output. If we want our employees to feel fulfilled, important, satisfied with their perfomance we as managers MUST recognize the "forces that affect" people.
Let's examine these forces.
Machines: People must be given the right equipment to do their jobs properly. Often companies buy equipment based on Price. If this equipment is hard to operate or constantly breaking, it will frustrate the worker thus making them feel like a failure, even though it is not their fault. Equipment is the responsibility of management and management must recognize what is best for the worker to produce a quality output.
Environment: The environment in which a person works is probably the most influential force management must deal with. We are not just talking about clean, noisey, smelly, cold, hot, dingy...etc. We also include things like Pressure. Is the employee under pressure to get the job done. Is there a time constraint? This affects the employees attitude. We must include the environment created by a poor manager of bad management. "Employees don't leave bad jobs, they leave bad managers." common quote. Management is responsible for the environment in which the people work!
Materials: People can only work with the materials management provides. Materials differ from equipment. Materials are things used and consumed in the process. Again, if management buys materials on just price alone, poor materials can contribute to people's frustrations and affect the quality of the output.
People: Human factors plays an important part of people's happiness. "It's not enough to do your best. You must why your doing it, what your doing and how to do it.." Dr. Deming. Training is SO important. Training should not just be how to do a job. You must include Why there are doing it.
"Training MUST be a Continous Process"
Through training, management can convey company goals and objective in addition to practical knowledge. An understanding of mutual goals helps build comradery. Training should be a continuous process, it shows the employees that management cares about them and what they do. Training employees not only will help employees morale, but will improve consistency in quality of your processes.
Method: Methods are procedures. How you do the processes should clear and understood by all people. Poor procedures lead to inconsistency and arguments among the workers. Management must be responsible to provide each and every person with procedures to do the work.
By concentrating on the forces that affect people, management can create an environment that will make people happy. Practices of very successful organization include an environment that allows people to "enjoy" their work. This is the job of management.
