A High-Level Breakdown of a Systems Administrator’s Role on Your Internal, On-Site Team
In this post, I'm spotlighting another critical player in your internal IT team—the Systems Administrator. If the Network Administrator builds the highways for data to travel, the Systems Administrator is the one ensuring all the vehicles (aka your company’s software, servers and devices, etc.) are fueled up, running smoothly and staying secure.
Now, let’s put this into simple terms—because unless you live and breathe IT, words like “server maintenance” and “patch management” might sound like a different language. Thankfully, your Sys Admin is fluent in all things infrastructure, security and troubleshooting—so you don’t have to be!
Here’s a look at what they do behind the scenes every day (aside from helping you find that file you swear was saved yesterday):
?? Managing & Maintaining Servers: Think of them as mechanics for your company’s digital engine. They ensure servers are properly configured, updated and running efficiently so your business doesn’t stall.
?? User & Device Management: From setting up new employees with login credentials to managing company devices, they make sure everyone has access to the tools they need—without opening the door to security risks.

?? Software Updates & Patch Management: Cyber threats are always evolving, but so are your system updates. Your Systems Admin ensures software and security patches are installed on time, keeping your company protected from vulnerabilities.
?? Data Backup & Disaster Recovery: Imagine losing a week’s worth of work due to a server crash—nightmare, right? Systems Admins implement backup solutions and recovery plans so your data stays safe and accessible, no matter what happens.
?? Security & Compliance: They’re the silent guardians against cyber threats, ensuring company data is secure, policies are enforced and compliance requirements are met. In short, they make sure no one (inside or outside the company) is clicking on that suspicious email.
A strong Systems Administrator is like an invisible force keeping your workplace running—ensuring stability, security and efficiency without skipping a beat.
Stay tuned for our next post, where we’ll dive into the MSP perspective and how they work in perfect sync with your internal IT team.
