The Syrian who wanted to be a teacher but is saving lives in a?war
Ammar Al Salmo wanted to be a teacher. That never happened. He wanted to wake up and go teach in a school. Instead, he wakes up to bombs going off in his neighbourhood. He and his fellow volunteers have been saving lives of Syrians who have been ravaged by the Syrian War for more than ten years.
Ammar leads The White Helmets. The internationally acclaimed group also known as The Syrian Civil Defence Organization was founded by James Le Mesurier in 2014 during the Syrian Civil War. They help people who need medical evacuation or rescue mission in the event of a bombing and getting civilians to safety from war torn regions. They are a volunteer led organisation.
On the Podcast, Ammar says, “I was studying to be a teacher. But now I help people buried in a rubble. That is my goal. I always say, can we not save one more extra life everyday?” He laments that the course of history changed his life.
In the fourth Episode of The Unmads, I chat with Ammar Al Salmo, one of the key leaders of The White Helmets.
