Syria: 13 years of crisis, child deaths at historic low, 1 in 3 affected by neurological conditions

13 years of conflict in Syria—this underfunded humanitarian situation is dire

The prolonged crisis in Syria has inflicted immense suffering on the civilian population. A record 16.7?million people in Syria need humanitarian assistance, including 7.2?million who have been internally displaced.

Health needs are overwhelming. But the disrupted health system is struggling to provide life-sustaining and life-saving health services in a context marked by conflict, economic instability, disease outbreaks and natural disasters. Currently, 65% of Syria’s hospitals and 62% of its primary health care centres are either closed or only partially functioning. Read the full statement.

Despite escalating humanitarian needs, the funding towards this crisis is dwindling. With a 27% drop in aid in 2023, and an expected 30% decline in 2024, the situation is dire.

Global child deaths reached a historic low in 2022

A new report reveals that more children are surviving today than ever before, with the global under-5 mortality rate declining by 51 percent since 2000.

Several low- and lower-middle-income countries have outpaced this decline, showing that progress is possible when resources are sufficiently allocated to primary health care, including child health and well-being. For example, the findings show that Cambodia, Malawi, Mongolia, and Rwanda have reduced under-5 mortality by over 75 percent since 2000.

But the findings also show that, despite this progress, there is still a long road ahead to end all preventable child and youth deaths. In addition to the 4.9 million lives lost before the age of 5—nearly half of which were newborns—the lives of another 2.1 million children and youth aged 5–24 were also cut short. Most of these deaths were concentrated in sub-saharan Africa and southern Asia.?

Neurological conditions are the leading cause of illness and disability worldwide

In 2021, more than 3 billion people worldwide were living with a neurological condition. The overall amount of disability, illness, and premature death caused by neurological conditions has increased by 18% since 1990.

Over 80% of neurological deaths and health losses occur in low- and middle-income countries, and access to treatment varies widely. High-income countries have up to 70 times more neurological professionals per 100 000 people than low- and middle-income countries. Find out more.

The best solution for the destruction of human lives, is to halt big interests that support unethical practices such as wars, Asian wet markets, where sentient animals are horrendously tortured/killed,even boiled alive; and prioritizing greed and abnormality in the XXI century, that led us to the climate crises, COVID pandemics, and ailments due to unethical wars, that only support the interests of unethical, greedy "humans"!!! WHO must intervene, why is not???????????????????????????????????????????????
