Academic Year 2021-22
Art School in the Time of Corona Virus
Welcome to the first synopsis of the Art Department. This document is prepared to share news and accolades with all current and former students, faculty, staff, and family. Please share widely.
Academic Year 21-22 saw the gradual repopulation of campus. In Fall of 21 the campus reopened for the first time in two years for face to face and hybrid classes. This saw a student population in the Art Department of 25% with the remaining 75% being fully remote. There were bumps, bruises, and a lot of missteps, but slowly we learned how to come together as humans again, and do this thing we call Art, Art History, and Visual Communication Design, as humans, together.?
We also took the time to redesign much of Building 13, bring it radically forward in style and technology. This includes new equipment for the Wood Shop, a brand new Art History room, a brand new Illustration room, a brand new Typography room, a conference room for faculty, and a shared workspace for part time faculty. (Also, new paint, and carpet!) In short the building looks better than it ever has, and is finally verging towards the quality the students deserve.?
The Print Lab reopened, and reopened with new equipment. To date we now have: Four 3D printers, one 3D scanner, one plotter, one over sized printer, one laser cutter, one b/w printer, one RISO printer. This summer we will be getting all new colors and masters for the RISO and installing a rendering farm for Motion and 3D projects in the print lab as well.?
But wait, thats a lot of equipment for that tiny room! You’re right! So we’ve moved the print lab upstairs now to accommodate more equipment, more student workers, and more space to work for students.?
In Spring of 22, the Art Department’s face to face population grew from 25% to 75%! The building is getting loud and messy in all the best possible ways, for the first time, in so very, very long. The Department looks forward to Fall 22 where we will be topping the 80% mark, with a goal of near normal population levels for Fall of 23.?
Also, LOCKERS! This summer we are getting rid of our old tetanus trap lockers and getting all new lockers. The place is looking almost as handsome as you are. Cheers.?
