Today training and learning have become synonyms for organizations. With globalization and development in the field of human resource management and organizational psychology there is greater awareness in organizations on the importance of training and developing their human resources.
Developing and enhancing skills, knowledge and proficiencies of employees has become the center of focus especially for multinationals. It’s not uncommon to find centralized learning and development department with dedicated specialists who focus on managing talent and leadership and help them accelerate acquisition of required knowledge which in turn can accelerate the advancement of the organization’s performance and reach goals.
But is there a difference between Training culture and Learning culture?
The following describes scenarios in two competing organizations X and Y
X: Has a centralized learning and development department with a team dedicated towards managing training calendars for all the employees and organizing trainings for them.
Y: Has a L&D department with a dedicated team. The team primarily focuses on facilitating and organizing trainings based on the requirements given by different business units, department heads, functional heads and managers for their team.L & D department also suggests other trainings which are centralized.
X: The L&D department decides the areas which require trainings and the mode and medium of trainings. Could be workshops, training sessions, courses etc. The department heads are asked to nominate employees for training.
Y: Business units heads, department heads and managers are involved in deciding the content, mode and medium of trainings.
X: The L&D department decides the areas which require trainings and the mode and medium of trainings. Could be workshops, training sessions, courses etc. The department heads are asked to nominate employees for training.
Y: Business units heads, department heads and managers are involved in deciding the content, mode and medium of trainings.
X: L&D department conducts training (post) program evaluation through questionnaires for trainees and their managers to assess the impact of training.
Y: The team leader or business unit heads conduct training (post) program evaluation in terms of impact of the learnings on output, productivity or efficiency of the unit/team/individual by comparing individual/ team and unit performance through group discussions, fact sheets and other data to assess the impact of sessions
X: Performance of L&D department is evaluated based on
- Number of training programs organized in a year
- Number of employees attending the trainings
Y: Performance of L&D department is evaluated based on
- Results of training program evaluation
- Feedback of trainees

9 年Thanks Sony, Silpika, Indira and Sudipta for your comments. Agree with your perspectives :)
Organization Y definitely inclined to be called a Learning organization. However would like to add that true Learning organization would need to be judged based on in people capability in other related areas such as coaching and mentoring, use of knowledge based assets and communities.

9 年Of-course it is "Y". Y enables learning based on the employees and verticals/ business units goals but not forgetting the bigger picture. "Y" is a better model for achieving higher employee productivity, retention, branding & revenue. While X model is best for mandatory training's e.g. Ethics or Code of Conduct training' and many more; across all depts in an Organisation.
