After my time last week in Vancouver at the BCorp Champions Retreat – the theme was connecting and mobilizing values-aligned people using business as a force for good!?
So, the question I left with was…
“Why don’t BCorps work with other BCorps more?”
I understand that one could argue they may face hurdles aligning their specific business models and operational capabilities – but I think we have a real chance of underscoring the need for greater interconnectedness and collaboration within the BCorp community.
Engaging in business with fellow B Corporations (BCorps) can be highly beneficial, aligning with shared values and objectives. Therefore, I wanted to share some of my personal thoughts for reasons to do biz with BCorps, followed by insights into why it might not happen as often as it could, and advice on how to change that:
Reasons for BCorps to Collaborate:
- Shared Values and Mission: BCorps are committed to social and environmental responsibility. Doing business with each other reinforces these values and contributes to a more sustainable and equitable economy.
- Building Trust and Reputation: Collaborating with other BCorps, known for their ethical practices, can enhance a company's reputation and build trust among consumers who value corporate responsibility.
- Creating a Stronger Community: By supporting each other, BCorps can create a strong network that fosters innovation, collaboration, and shared learning.
- Quality and Reliability: BCorps undergo rigorous certification processes, ensuring they maintain high standards. This can be reassuring when choosing business partners.
- Market Differentiation: Aligning with other BCorps can help companies stand out in the market, appealing to a growing demographic of conscious consumers.
Challenges in BCorp-to-BCorp Business:
- Awareness and Visibility: Some BCorps may not be fully aware of other BCorps or the benefits of working with them. Increasing visibility and understanding is crucial.
- Geographic and Sector Limitations: There may be fewer BCorps in certain areas or industries, limiting the opportunities for collaboration.
- Cost Considerations: Sometimes, products or services offered by BCorps can be more expensive due to their sustainable and ethical practices, making cost a barrier.
- Scaling and Capacity Issues: Smaller BCorps might not have the capacity to engage in larger contracts or meet the demands of bigger businesses.
Advice to Increase BCorp Collaboration:
- Networking and Community Building: Foster a stronger BCorp community through networking events, online forums, and collaborative projects.
- BCorp Directories and Marketplaces: Utilize and promote directories that list BCorp businesses, making it easier to find potential partners.
- Highlight Success Stories: Share case studies and success stories of BCorp collaborations to inspire and educate others.
- Create Collaborative Platforms: Develop platforms or initiatives specifically for BCorps to showcase their services and products to each other.
- Flexible Solutions: Work towards accommodating smaller BCorps in terms of order size, payment terms, etc., to make it easier for them to participate.
- Educational Initiatives: Conduct workshops and seminars to educate BCorps about the benefits and potential of doing business with each other.
By addressing these challenges and leveraging the strengths of the BCorp community, there is significant potential to increase collaboration for the greater good, creating a more sustainable and socially responsible business landscape.
And let's be honest, uniting under the B Corp banner, just feels good!
