SYNC STORIES: Kentucky rock band earned accolades from ZZ Top guitarist Billy F. Gibbons

Otis, a southcentral Kentucky rock band that hails from the tiny hamlet of Sulphur Well, has signed its first record deal. The band has entered into a contract with Cleopatra Records, a Los Angeles-based independent record label, to record its second album, “Eyes of the Sun.”

Hailing from Kentucky, blues rock band Otis has been electrifying audiences with a trademark blend of soulful vocals, classic rock rhythms, and southern tones. Bandmates Boone Froggett (vocals/guitar), Steve Jewell (guitar), John Seeley (bass), and Andrew Gilpin (drums) draw inspiration from the likes of Muddy Waters and The Allman Brothers Band. But to devotees of southern rock, they represent something more. “If ever there were a band to fill…the void left by the loss of groups like the Allman Brothers, Otis is it,” says Grammy?-winning guitarist and producer Paul Nelson (protégé of the late Johnny Winter)

“We are very excited to be signed to Cleopatra Records,” said band member Steve Jewell Jr. Joining Jewell in the band is Boone Froggett, Andrew Gilpin and John Seeley.Such notable artists listed on its record label’s roster include Jimmy Page, Cactus, B.B. King, Howlin’ Wolf and Quiet Riot, among many others.

“Eyes of the Sun” will feature all original music This album has elements of blues, rock and soul and southern roots,” Jewell said. “Eyes of the Sun” will be available in local stores, as well as on iTunes.

Earlier this year, the band thought there might be a possibility that Billy Gibbons with ZZ Top would appear on the album. “Unfortunately, we were unable to get him,” Jewell said. “He’s been pretty busy. Maybe later on down the road.” Jewell shared a message on his personal Facebook page in late April from Gibbons regarding the band’s first album, “Tough Times: A tribute to John Brim,”

Gibbons stated in the message that he liked the album and that it was “stunning” with “all around enjoyable listening.” “Fine singing, sweet guitar tunes…stunning!” – Billy Gibbons, ZZ Top

Jewell came to know Gibbons through their mutual friend, Greg Martin, guitarist for the Kentucky Headhunters.Otis, the Kentucky Headhunters and Black Stone Cherry all played a concert with ZZ Top in Bowling Green during the Lost River Music Fest in 2015.
