Synapsers' April: Bridging the gap between academia and industry

Hello, everyone!

We have a sneaking suspicion April has become everyone’s favorite month. With so many days off, it’s a wonder we managed to squeeze in that much work! But true to form, we started strong and ended even stronger.

From participating at AUC’s Employment Fair and The Knowledge Hub Fair, to our Managing Data Science Consultant and Machine Learning Lead leading talks at DSC Mena, our techQualia head getting featured at MIT Sloan Management Review and leading a panel discussion at PCI Congress in Abu Dhabi, and the launch of our own new ‘In the next 2 minutes’ series (!) – it’s safe to say, we’ve had quite the month!?

At the heart of our endeavors this month lay a singular focus: AI education and literacy. Every initiative we undertook was a testament to our ethos and our unwavering commitment to advancing AI education and closing the literacy gap across diverse industries.

But here’s the kicker: we value your insights just as much as our own! As part of the Synapse community, we’d love to hear your thoughts. So, if you happen to stumble upon any untapped avenues where our AI literacy efforts could make a difference, don’t hesitate to reach out. Let’s collaborate and co-create a future where tech innovation is as accessible as it is equitable!

But enough chit-chat—let’s dive right into the excitement! In this issue:

  1. Bridging the gap between academia and industry at Employment Fairs!?

Participating in university employment fairs is more than just a recruitment tactic for us at Synapse Analytics; it’s a testament to our commitment to nurturing the next generation of AI talent and fostering a culture of innovation. ?2. Synapsers at DSC MENA 24

At this flagship summit, in collaboration with Information Technology Industry Development Agency, ITIDA ,? Egypt University of Informatics-EUI , and the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT), Egypt, our Synapsers represented! We’re thrilled to share that our Machine Learning Lead Nezar El-Kady and Managing Data Science Consultant Omar Ossama gave deeply informative and insightful talks at DSC MENA 2024 Edition.

Nezar shared his insights on navigating the AI revolution, where the industry stands today, and what to look for going forward. Meanwhile, Omar focused more on his career path from the Oil & Gas company to working in an AI SaaS company such as Synapse Analytics.

Asa team, we always seek to share our knowledge and experiences with the community, as it's a foundational step to ensuring innovation and advancement as a collective.

3. ?techQualia representing at PCI Abu Dhabi and MIT Sloan

Another great month for our research arm, techQualia, led by our AI Philosopher Aliah Yacoub!?

The third edition of the ?International Congress of Arabic Publishing & Creative Industries in Abu Dhabi, UAE, was a great success, and we’re happy to have shared in the success! Aliah Yacoub had the privilege of a panel entitled "Beyond Bytes and Pages: Impact of Generative AI on Humanity" with industry leaders Nadim Sadek, Professor Preslav Nakov, and Dr.Hoda A.Alkhzaimi. The panel discussed the profound effects of generative AI on creative industries and the broader societal implications on humanity.

In collaboration with: Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) and Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre

This month, Aliah also contributed to MIT Sloan Management Review - Middle East! The article, ‘As more firms in the middle east use AI, regulating the tech becomes crucial’, sheds light on the gap between regulation and tech innovation. Aliah’s insights on the issue were focused on the development and deployment of Ethical AI:

“AI algorithms, if not properly designed, can reinforce biases present in the data they’re trained on, leading to unfair outcomes for certain groups and perpetuating existent social inequalities in vulnerable or marginalized communities,” says Yacoub."
