“It’s easy.” How often have we heard that about a task, only to discover it’s anything but? Interestingly, this mistaken belief comes from two perspectives: the novice and the expert. What I call The Symmetry of Simplicity Paradox explains why both groups—those who know too little and those who know too much—arrive at the same false conclusion.

Novices believe a task is simple because they lack the experience of its hidden complexity. Meanwhile, the expert, having internalised that complexity through mastery, forgets how difficult it once was and assumes it must be easy for everyone else. Despite their opposing levels of competence, they share the same flawed assumption: “This is easy.”

How the Paradox Plays Out

The Symmetry of Simplicity Paradox manifests in various industries and disciplines, where surface simplicity disguises more profound complexity. Consider these examples:

1. Project Management

  • Novice: “You just set deadlines and assign tasks.”
  • Expert: “It’s about instinct—you just know how to manage people and resources.”
  • Reality: Effective project management requires advanced skills in risk assessment, stakeholder alignment, and strategic execution—all far more challenging than they appear.

2. Innovation

  • Novice: “Innovation is just about coming up with a big idea—simple!”
  • Expert: “It’s about following the process; innovation is a natural by-product if you know what to look for.”
  • Reality: Genuine innovation demands deep domain knowledge, iterative experimentation, market validation, risk-taking, and the ability to synthesise ideas from multiple disciplines.

3. Launching a Startup

  • Novice: “You just need a great idea, a website, and a few customers—how hard can it be?”
  • Expert: “Startups are all about finding product-market fit and scaling—it’s simple once you get the formula right.”
  • Reality: Building a successful startup is an exercise in continuous adaptation. It requires strategic thinking, fundraising, hiring, marketing, and navigating legal and operational complexities—most of which go unnoticed at first glance.

Why It Matters

The Symmetry of Simplicity Paradox has real-world consequences, especially in leadership, mentorship, and decision-making. When experts underestimate the complexity of a task, they may delegate critical responsibilities to someone unprepared, assuming it will be easy. Meanwhile, novices can overreach, mistakenly believing they have the necessary skills to succeed.

Consider a scenario in healthcare where a consultant reads a patient’s medical notes and test results and believes the diagnosis is straightforward. In delegating, they assume a junior doctor will interpret the findings easily. The consultant’s experience leads them to see the results as evident without fully appreciating the difficulty and complexity.

The junior doctor, eager for responsibility, keen to impress, and equally confident that the diagnosis is simple, lacks the expertise to interpret the test results accurately. Believing the results are easy to understand, they overlook critical indicators and proceed with the wrong treatment.

The outcome is a misdiagnosis that carried potentially life-threatening consequences. The consultant and the junior doctor arrived at the same incorrect conclusion: they believed the test results were easy to interpret. The results were complex, and neither of them recognised this until it was too late.

In science and engineering, the 1999 Mars Climate Orbiter disaster offers a parallel lesson. A seemingly routine task—converting navigation data from imperial to metric units—was delegated without recognising its critical importance. The result? The spacecraft, worth over $300 million, disintegrated in Mars’ atmosphere due to a simple unit conversion error. What seemed like a straightforward task turned out to be far more complex and consequential.

In both cases, recognising the hidden complexity of seemingly simple tasks—and fostering a culture that encourages second opinions and questioning assumptions—is crucial to preventing such failures.

A Note on Dunning-Kruger

If you’re familiar with cognitive biases, you might think of the Dunning-Kruger effect, which explains how novices often overestimate their abilities because they don’t yet recognise their own limitations. The Symmetry of Simplicity Paradox shares some common ground but goes a step further, involving not only novices but also experts.

? Novices assume a task is easy because they cannot see its complexity.

? Experts, assume it is easy because they have seen past the complexity, they’ve internalised it so deeply that they no longer recognise its significance for others.

Both groups arrive at the same mistaken conclusion for entirely different reasons.
