Sydney..... Stop Making Sense

You may find yourself behind the wheel of a large automobile.

And you may find yourself in a beautiful house, with a beautiful wife.

And you may ask yourself "What is that beautiful house?"

And you may ask yourself "Where does that highway go to?"

And you may ask yourself, "Am I right, am I wrong?"

And you may say to yourself, "My God, what have I done?"

Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down.

Same as it ever was, same as it ever was.....

For those that can remember the 80's band Talking Heads, the lyrics of this song Once in a Lifetime ruminates about societies unchecked consumerism, drudgery of living life according to social expectations and experiencing an existential crisis in the pursuit and attainment of societies commonly accepted trophies (a large automobile, beautiful house, beautiful wife) and whether or not these "trophies" are real, relevant and/or repressive.

Yes, sometimes Sydney's nonsense does makes some sense.

Work, save, invest and do generally what family and society has expects from you and I believe you will be rewarded materialistically, socially and with opportunity.

Front Row NYE Fireworks ?? Sydney.

But then what?

To quote another great 80's record the Wired World of Sport 12th Man at the 28th minute, these f#*@ing cars have been going round and round and its so f#*@ing boring!!!

Just like a F1 team's sole focus, purpose and pursuit to go faster, improve equipment, gain more sponsors to fund their passion and win races, but a life ultimately limited and existing to one of going round and round in circles, unaware of a more enriching life beyond the track.

Small wins are still wins.

Don't get me wrong, I love Formula 1 too. So much so, that I have on my bucket list to attend and watch the F1 in person at Monaco & Singapore.

However life beyond the track is good!

Scratch that. It's awesome!

Anyways, this September marks one and a half years since selling the business, retirement, I have been discovering life beyond the track, where does this highway actually goes too..... and that there is in fact a bigger life to be experienced beyond one endlessly going round and round in circles.

Hmm...Blurred Lines or is it the rum ?? ??

Yes, Sydney is a fun, and beautiful and diverse city and on paper it does seem to makes so much sense ??.

Cockatoo Island ?????? its wow so much bigger than I expected ??

However, I'm also finding great pleasure now enjoying the slow lane (twice weekly harbour walks, ferry rides, learning new recipes, chores, portfolio management, booking o/s travels and time with family, friends, etc...) whilst watching others go "round and round", making honestly residing in Sydney feels more like Hotel California when looking at it from the outside in.

Ah retirement.... and I thought Cairns was great.

No alarm, no pressure = recreation & re-creation, recalibration and realignment to who we are, who we want to be, our truth and our core values.

Life in the Slow Lane?? Home baked Lasagne ????

And such a different track too baby! Groovy! ????

See ya on the flip side??

September Goals

  • Travelling Europe for the next 3 months, 4 countries ????????????
  • Purchase winter ski season pass Japan 2025????

What am I reading/watching/listening?

  • Reading. Kindle TBD.
  • Watching? Probably a bunch airplane movies, YouTube videos of what to do in the towns/cities we are visiting the following week.
  • Listening. Probably a whole bunch of audio tours, google translator etc..
