“S*x sells!”?
Have you heard of the statement, “S*x sells!”?
It is a well-established fact in the marketing and sales industry. Marketers have been using this tactic for generations.
In the beginning, they did it modestly. But slowly they became bold and introduced n*dity.
By the name of freedom, they continued 'objectifying women'!
Let me give some examples of the implementation of this concept by objectifying the women in a very subtle way:
- Having a beautiful woman at the front desk
- Having a woman as the PA of a male boss
- Having a women presenter as the MC of a seminar, symposium & conferences
- Having a photoshopped and make upped women's photo on the front page of a website, social media page, posters & ad's
- Having women in the video ad to promote/sell any product or service.
And the list can go on…
Result?
“S*x sells!”
My problem is with the Muslim individuals and organizations who adopted this concept knowingly or unknowingly.
Let me give you some examples that I have personally witnessed:
- Having a beautiful Muslim sister at the front desk.
- Having a Muslim sister as the PA of male Muslim boss/Dayee/Shaikh
- Having a Muslim sister as the MC of an Islamic Conference
- Having a (young) Muslim sister’s photo on the front page of the website, social media pages, posters & ad's
- Having a sister in the video ad that they made for the charity/dawah campaign
And the list can go on…
In the beginning, all these started very modestly. But slowly Muslim marketers are becoming bold.
What can you do about it?
1. Condemn such an attempt of 'objectification of our Muslim sisters'.
2. Advice/remind the organizers to fear Allah.
3. Advice the Muslim individuals who are participating in it knowingly or unknowingly. Remind them about the negative short/ long term social impact.
4. Remind them that a good intention is not enough. It must be followed by the right guidance from the righteous Muslim scholars.
5. If you have done it or participated in it, question your motive! Don't simply justify your action with the excuse of 'talent and contribution’. Dig deep into assessing your intentions, you will know what I am saying.
6. If you have participated in anything like this, stop it immediately and do Tawbah.
7. Don't rely on my post alone. Please go to a righteous Islamic scholar and ask about this practice. Ask, what went wrong and what you can do to rectify it.
And Allah knows best.
