Switching off the pelvic floor
The pelvic floor is essentially a muscular hammock that supports your abdominal organs and the sphincters that prevent incontinence. It forms the floor of the abdominal canister (I like to imagine the abdomen as being a bit like a can of beans, with the diaphragm forming the top of the can, and the transversus abdominis muscle - the deepest of the abdominal muscles - running around the sides of the can and holding the contents in).
Many people have difficulty activating (switching on) their pelvic floor muscles, and so I recently made a video explaining how to do that. But then inevitably, a few days later I saw a couple of patients whose pelvic floor muscles were overactive, and they couldn't switch them off easily! So this video is for people whose pelvic floor muscles are in spasm, and demonstrates my technique for finding the pelvic floor and relaxing it.
