The Switch from "Studying" to "Learning"

The Switch from "Studying" to "Learning"

"I'm really frustrated with my English"

These were the words of a new coachee I recently started working with. I've heard similar comments over the years from many Spanish speakers trying to improve their business English!

My coachee had been diligently studying English for years, using the same methods she learned in school—memorizing vocabulary lists, studying grammar rules, and repeating phrases. Despite her hard work, she felt frustrated! She struggled to use English confidently in real business situations, and her progress seemed slow and unsteady.

Maria's experience is all too common. When most people continue or restart their English journey, they tend to return to these traditional methods because it’s the only approach they know. However, the traditional approach feels a little like packing your suitcase full of things 'just in case' you might need them in the future.

I strongly believe that once you have a base knowledge of grammar and pronunciation, it's time to switch to a more practical and applied approach to improving!

Making the Switch

?? Real learning is where the transformation happens. It’s about taking everything you've packed in your backpack and using it in real-life situations. Learning is about applying your knowledge and understanding the "how" and "why" of using the language.

Here are some of the techniques I introduce in my coaching programs to help people make this switch to a much more practical and communicative approach:

  1. Dive into Real Conversations: Speaking is about as practical an application of the language as you can get! It's essential for building neural pathways and cementing what you’ve learned firmly in your brain. When you engage, you connect and create long-term memories. So, don't wait for the perfect moment. Start talking, role-playing, and having real conversations.
  2. Welcome Feedback: Whether it's from a friend, colleague, language coach or your mum, feedback is your friend. It helps you see where you can improve and refine your skills.
  3. Use English in Your Work: The best way to learn is by doing. Use Business English in your emails, presentations, and meetings. The more you use it in your professional context, the more natural it will become.
  4. Reflect and Adjust: Take a moment to reflect on your progress. What’s working well? What needs more practice? Adapt your learning methods to keep improving.

But how can I take the first step towards making this switch?

Diving into the conversation is an excellent start. It's like diving into the sea or pool. At first, it's icy cold. But as you keep swimming, the water becomes warmer until it becomes a true pleasure. Chris Bate
