Switch careers: to be or not to be ??

If you're feeling tired and considering switching careers, you might wonder if it's worth it and what other positions to consider. Here are two possible paths to choose:

  • Transition Within Your Industry: You can explore different roles within the same industry where you already have significant work experience and understanding. This could be any industry like pharmaceuticals, IT, FMCG, etc.
  • Seek Radical Change: If you're seeking more significant changes, you might consider switching both your position and industry altogether.

In both cases, it's important to understand that any career switch involves learning. The approach to learning might differ though:

?? If you want to sit on two chairs, the first option is your choice. In this situation you could consider internal training. For example, if you currently work in HR but want to become a Project Manager in the same industry, you could apply for an internship within your company to gain project management skills. This way, your responsibilities within the company would be divided between HR and project intern, allowing you to keep income while learning ??

Alternatively, you could attend courses while keeping your current job and start looking for a new job after completing the courses.

In both scenarios, be prepared for the fact that switching to a new position may mean starting from scratch and potentially earning less initially. This requires mental preparation, as many people who have reached a certain level in one position may struggle with being a beginner again ??

My advice is to consider positions that partially align with your existing experience, where you can apply both recent knowledge and past experience. For example, if you're an HR specialist, you likely have experience with people management, delegation, and organizational processes, which are valuable skills for a Project Management position.

??If you're considering a radical change and want to start a completely new career in an industry where you have no experience, this option requires significant investment of time and money. There is no way to start this journey without proper education and certification?? On the bright side, your advantage lies in your life experience. If you've been able to learn and achieve a certain level in your previous position, use that knowledge to succeed in your new endeavor.

Some general recommendations:

  • ?? If you're unsure about choosing a new career, consider options adjacent to your current field where you already have at least 30% experience and skills.
  • ?? Leverage your existing skills—continue learning and acquiring new skills, and use your soft skills to gain new knowledge.
  • ?? When looking for a new job in the future, either continue in your current company if possible or venture into a new market. In either case, present your experience as if you've already worked on commercial projects. How to do it? Complete test tasks, work on charitable projects and with course mentors, ask for recommendations, prepare your portfolio and attend as many interviews as possible. For more detailed information on how to present commercial experience you don't have, read my post.
  • ?? Seek recommendations from previous employers that show how you can achieve results, learn quickly, and handle stressful situations effectively – such accents will help your potential employers understand what kind of employee you are.
  • ?? Keep up with industry trends and demonstrate your agility, intelligence, and creativity to stand out in a competitive job market – keep learning, learning, and learning again!

I hope these recommendations help you determine whether a career change is necessary for you and, if so, how to do it effectively and sustainably. I'd love to hear about your experiences in the comments ??
