Swipe, Drive, Forget: Annual & Lifetime Toll Passes Coming Soon!
For decades, highway tolls have been an unavoidable expense for Indian commuters, often leading to frustration and financial strain. But soon, relief could be on the way, thanks to the government's plan to introduce annual and lifetime toll passes. Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has confirmed that a sweeping change in the toll system is in its final stages, with a uniform toll policy expected to be announced soon. Alongside this, a revolutionary GNSS-based toll collection system is in the works to eliminate physical toll booths altogether.
Smoother Rides Ahead: Govt Plans Uniform Toll Policy & Digital Collection
To make highway travel more affordable and hassle-free, the government is introducing two new toll pass options—a one-year pass for ?3,000 and a lifetime pass (valid for 15 years) for ?30,000. These passes will be seamlessly integrated into FASTags, removing the need for separate purchases. This move aims to reduce congestion, lower costs for frequent commuters, and address the widespread dissatisfaction with existing toll collection methods.
At present, monthly passes cost around ?340, totaling ?4,080 per year, which makes the proposed annual pass a better economical choice. Moreover, the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways is also considering reducing the toll rate per kilometer to further ease the financial burden on highway users.
The Bigger Picture: Aim to Slash Costs & End Long Queues
With India’s National Highway network spanning 146,195 km, toll collections have increased, reaching ?64,809 crore in 2023-24, marking a 35% increase from the previous year. However, private cars contribute only 21% of toll revenue, despite accounting for 53% of total transactions. In response, the government aims to balance the burden by making toll payments fairer and more efficient. Additionally, efforts are being made to relocate toll plazas outside municipal limits to prevent unnecessary congestion within city areas.
Gadkari’s announcement follows the Union Budget 2025-26, where Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman unveiled a groundbreaking zero-income-tax initiative for individuals earning up to ?12.75 lakh per annum, injecting more disposable income into the economy. The combined impact of these policies is expected to boost overall spending, including on road travel.

The highway toll pass initiative, combined with better connectivity, could revolutionize intercity travel, making it easier for people to attend concerts, sporting events, and business conferences without excessive toll expenses.
The Road Ahead: A Future Without Toll Barriers
In addition to toll passes, Gadkari confirmed that the GNSS-based toll collection system is in its final stages. This barrier-free system, inspired by successful models in Europe, will eliminate the need for physical toll booths, ensuring uninterrupted highway travel. If implemented successfully, this could put an end to long queues, reduce fuel wastage, and enhance travel efficiency nationwide.
With these transformative policies in motion, India's highways are on the brink of a new era—one that promises faster, more affordable, and hassle-free travel for millions of commuters. And for those planning to catch the next big concert in another city? The journey might just be as smooth as the music itself.
