Swimming for Life: Why Every Child Should Learn to Swim

Create. Inspire. Succeed.

—At the Canadian International School of Phnom Penh (CIS), we believe swimming is more than just a sport—it’s a life skill. In addition to keeping children safe, teaching them to swim boosts their self-esteem, fosters resilience and benefits their general health.
As the Swim Program Coordinator, I’m passionate about creating a program where every child feels welcome, regardless of their starting skill level. Our program is based on the Long-Term Athlete Development model, which emphasizes gradual development. Whether a student is learning their first strokes or preparing for competitive meets, we ensure they’re supported at every stage.
One of the things that has defined my life is swimming. I discovered it as a child and quickly realized it was more than an activity—it was a way to learn discipline, set goals and overcome challenges. Now, as a swim coordinator, I get to share those lessons with my colleagues and students. Watching them develop skills, grow in confidence and embrace the water is the most rewarding part of what I do.
At CIS, we’re not just teaching swimming; we’re helping students build skills they’ll carry with them for life. My hope is to inspire a lifelong love of swimming in every child who steps into the pool.

3 个月I learned to swim when I was very young - 5ish yrs old. I’m in my mid 60’s now and have over the years continued to get great enjoyment from swimming lengths (2 - 3. Kms) 3 or 4 times a week. It is such a good workout and provides much time for quiet contemplation.
