Introduction
In the summer of 2024, I embarked on a journey that tested my limits, both physically and emotionally. As a recovering cancer survivor, I decided to participate in Macmillan Cancer Support's "Swim the Channel" challenge, aiming to swim the equivalent of the 21-mile English Channel crossing.
This challenge was not just about swimming; it was about raising vital funds for Macmillan Cancer Support, an organisation that had been a pillar of strength during my cancer journey. This article shares my experience, the highs and lows, and the unwavering support I received from the Macmillan community.
The Beginning: Finding Motivation
My motivation to take part in this challenge stemmed from personal battles and the battles of those close to me. Having recently recovered from stage 3 neck cancer, I understood firsthand the importance of the support Macmillan provides. Additionally, my friend had just been diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer, and her daughter, a keen swimmer, inspired me to dive into this challenge. Seeing the "Swim It" challenge pop up on my Facebook feed was a sign; it was an opportunity to give back to an organisation that had done so much for me and others.
The Challenge: Swimming 21 Miles
Swimming 21 miles is no small feat, especially for someone who had never swum lengths before, other than the occasional dip while on holiday. The journey began in June, a particularly tough month due to my workload, the wet and miserable weather, and the emotional strain of my friend's diagnosis. Living on a boat added to the complexity, making it difficult to find time and the right conditions to swim. Yes, you are correct, these were pretty poor excuses but nonetheless, real.
The Struggle and the Drive
Starting late in June brought additional pressure to complete the challenge on time. However, this limited time frame also sharpened my focus and determination. Sharing my progress and struggles on social media brought a wave of support and encouragement from friends, family, and even strangers.
My local swimming pool, Chiswick New Pool, became a place of solace and joy as I neared the end of my challenge. The staff and a handful of fellow swimmers offered words of encouragement, making each swim session a communal experience.
The Role of Technology
The Macmillan Swim It app was a fantastic tool that tracked my progress, both in terms of lengths swum and funds raised. It added a layer of fun and motivation, allowing me to see the tangible impact of my efforts. Additionally, I built my own GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) to provide detailed information about cancer, Macmillan, and those I was fundraising for. This AI assistant helped create dynamic social media posts, provided swimming tips, and offered specific references to how my fundraising efforts were helping others.

The Emotional Highs and Lows
The challenge was an emotional roller-coaster. Each swim session allowed me to focus on the journey my friend and others were going through. There were moments of physical exhaustion, especially during the final sessions where I had to increase my rate to 60 lengths or more per session. The Macmillan community, through regular notifications and supportive social media interactions, played a crucial role in keeping my spirits high. Sharing my journey in the Facebook group brought immense encouragement, especially during the tough days.
I would like to thank all my sponsors, Macmillan and everyone else who supported me in this challenge. Most importantly, I would like to recommend to anyone thinking about taking on a challenge such as this, just do it!
A Cathartic Experience
Participating in the Swim It challenge was cathartic. It forced me to adopt a healthy routine, something I plan to maintain. More importantly, it provided a way to channel my energy and emotions into something positive. Each swim session was a time to close off from other interruptions and focus on my friend's journey and the journeys of many others battling cancer.
The Impact of Fundraising
The funds raised through this challenge will significantly impact Macmillan's ability to support those affected by cancer. Macmillan provides a wide range of services, from Macmillan Nurses who offer medical and emotional support, to financial grants that help cover the costs of travel to treatment and heating bills. The support line and online communities offer a space for people to share their experiences and receive support. Knowing that my efforts will contribute to these vital services is incredibly fulfilling.
Encouragement for Others
To anyone considering taking part in the Macmillan Swim It challenge or any fundraising activity for Macmillan, I have one piece of advice: JUST DO IT!
The experience is rewarding on so many levels. It provides a way to give back, adopt a healthier lifestyle, and join a community of supportive, like-minded individuals. The sense of achievement and the knowledge that you are making a real difference in the lives of those affected by cancer is unparalleled.
Conclusion
Completing the Swim the Channel challenge was one of the most challenging yet rewarding experiences of my life. It was a journey of resilience, hope, and community. I am proud to have been a part of it and grateful for the support I received along the way. Together, we can continue to support Macmillan Cancer Support and make a difference in the lives of those affected by cancer.
