Swift Current: The most important 2% of your week as a leader

Swift Current ~?The most important 2% of your week as a leader

So many leaders we?work with think that meetings are a waste of time. However, we?would suggest, and research supports, that regular 1:1s with your direct reports?are?one of the most important and highest ROI activities for leaders!

Leaders say they want to prioritize healthy and highly effective teams, yet consistently invest in as little as 2% of their week together - that’s just about 1 hour out of a 40-hour week!

As a busy leader, I (Chuck) often find myself needing to shuffle and reschedule 1:1s with my direct reports. It's easy to think this is just reality and necessary?but consider the unintended message it sends to your team when this becomes the norm.

If you're a leader and you're not prioritizing 1:1 meetings with your team, you're missing a HUGE opportunity to connect, communicate what's important, provide support, and drive performance!

Ripple Effect

Increase the effectiveness of your one-on-ones by considering Jack Zenger and Joseph Folkman’s six levels of listening. Which level are you currently and how can you step up a level or two?in your next meeting?

  • Level 1: Create a safe environment where pretty much anything can be discussed.
  • Level 2: Put away distractions like phones and laptops and you make appropriate eye contact with the other person.
  • Level 3:?Try to understand the main focus of what the other person is saying.
  • Level 4: Pay attention to non-verbal cues such as body language, facial expressions, or tone of voice.
  • Level 5: Understand the emotions and feelings of the other person and acknowledge them.
  • Level 6:?Ask good questions that are designed to let the other person see a new perspective or challenge an assumption that they may have.
