Sweet Treats For Breakfast

I was writing this reflection on my phone while waiting for the legendary lupis (traditional sweet cake) from Mbah Satinem.

I was there at 0745, I would have been the second batch that morning.

I have to start this reflection by sharing that I am someone who hardly queues for anything, food tops the list. But, when I came across Street Food: Asia on Netflix , I had to pay her a visit when I’m in Yogyakarta. I am prepared to queue for her food!?

What I learnt from her:

?1. We may not always be given the best circumstances, but we can make the best of the situations. Following in the footsteps of her grandmother and mother, she commits to her trade religiously for over 60 years, feeding two generations of her family simply by selling lupis. As a woman born in her times, I am so inspired by her simplicity and perseverance at the same time.?

Currently, at 77 years old, she is still going strong and doing business just as she always has.

??2. It is true that we go faster if we fly solo. However, there will come a point you will hit stagnation. Build a team to go further. In her case, her business was becoming so good that if she does not have a team, she will not be able to satisfy her loyal customers.

Her daughters helping out - issuing queue numbers, preparing banana leaves, collecting orders and money etc.

?3. If you can’t figure out what you really like, it is ok to be a Jack-of-All-Trades first to explore (i.e. engage in internships, projects, and voluntary work) and then make it a point to be a Master-of-One (I-shaped career model), and then work towards being a Master-of-A-Few (M-shaped career model).

"Why didn’t you retire?"

Because I am still healthy, and a lot of people come from many places to eat my snacks.

A few people gave up waiting which I was secretly happy about because I was afraid that it would have been sold out by the time it reaches me. Finally, after 85 minutes of waiting, it is makan time!?

Who says you can't have sweet treats for breakfast?

I finished this in less than 5 minutes.

?p/s If you would like to try this, be early! They start at 0600 and by 0830, it is sold out!
