Welcome to Alabama, nicknamed the Cotton State or Yellowhammer State. No, we are not talking about the Alabama football program, the crimson's tide.

Did you know you can become a P.E. engineer without a degree in Alabama? Obviously, there is a catch; you have to meet certain conditions.

There are 7 paths to PE licensure in Alabama. For all the paths, Alabama will NEVER waive the PE AND FE Exam, so you will have to take both exams, no matter what

Figure 1: A sample stamp for PE in Alabama

Path 1

  • Obtain at least an ABET-accredited bachelor's degree in any engineering field
  • Have at least 4 years of experience after obtaining the bachelor’s degree
  • Pass both the FE and PE exams

Path 2

  • Obtain an ABET-unaccredited bachelor's degree in any engineering field.
  • Have at least 6 years of experience after obtaining the bachelor’s degree
  • Pass both the FE and PE exams
  • Credential evaluation of the bachelor's degree

Path 3

  • Obtain a bachelor's degree in related science (physics or math) and an ABET-accredited master's degree in any engineering field

  • Pass both the FE and PE exams
  • Credential evaluation of the bachelor's degree

Path 4

  • Obtain an ABET/TAC-accredited bachelor's degree in any engineering technology field and an ABET-accredited master's degree in any engineering field.
  • Have at least 6 years of experience after obtaining the master’s degree
  • Pass both the FE and PE exam

Path 5

-? Be licensed initially in some state as a PE before Dec 31, 2005

  • Obtain a bachelor's degree in related science (physics or math, including 32 semester hours combined Math & Basic Sciences).
  • Have at least 8 years of experience before 12/31/05 that can be verified by PE Supervisor.
  • Pass both the FE and PE exams.

Path 6

  • Be licensed initially in some state as a PE before Dec 31, 2005
  • Obtain an ABET/TAC-accredited bachelor's degree in any engineering technology field
  • Have at least 8 years of experience before 12/31/05 that can be verified by PE Supervisor
  • Pass both the FE and PE exams.

Path 7

  • No Degree
  • Have at least 8 years of experience before 12/31/92 that can be verified by PE Supervisor.

So if you do not have a high school and a college degree, path 7 is yours.
What path will be readily applicable for you?

Thierry Curious to know if you have any background for what prompted this approach? I'm all for serious qualification checks, but I do believe that this doesn't mean we only have one avenue for doing this, so I like their multi-prong approach.

It takes a lot of additional work to figure out if there are really anyone eligible through some of these paths. Most other jurisdictions have degree/experience requirements that eliminate the non-degreed.
