Pilot Study for Integrated Test Bed for Aviation Technology

We strive to impact the world by turning bold ideas into reality.
Sweden excels in technologies for drones (Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS)), the Internet of Things, connectivity, and more. However, to become a leader in drone technology/UAS, better conditions are necessary for companies developing new solutions to test these technologies.
Companies, particularly in tech and deep tech, face significant challenges. The lack of test beds and other resources makes it difficult for businesses to develop, design, and test new services and products, such as UAS components and platforms.
Companies, including startups, require well-equipped testing grounds and demo environments where they can access essential expertise in infrastructure, aviation regulations, and technology to evaluate new technologies and services.
—Sweden has few test beds, particularly integrated ones, meaning those that combine academic expertise in aviation technology with access to controlled airspace. This type of testing ground allows for realistic testing," says Anders G. Nilsson, who is leading a new feasibility study aimed at exploring opportunities to establish an integrated and full-scale testing ground for drones.
Ideon Science Park, Lund University, and Annehem Fastigheter will conduct the feasibility study together, thanks to support from the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth (Tillv?xtverket). They will carry out market research by interviewing target groups and stakeholders to identify existing needs.
—Test beds are crucial for startups as well as established companies to test their technologies," says Ideon Science Park’s CEO Anders G. Nilsson. The goal of this feasibility study is to lay the groundwork for creating a testing ground in the next phase.

FACTS
What is a test bed?
A test bed for aviation technology is a controlled environment or platform where new aviation technologies, systems, or concepts can be developed, tested, and evaluated. A test bed can offer everything from a physical testing facility with wind tunnels and simulators to a virtual environment created using computer simulations.
Tech and Deep Tech
Deep tech refers to technology-based startups that focus on solving complex problems through groundbreaking scientific or technological advancements. Unlike "shallow tech," which often involves incremental improvements or software-based solutions, deep tech digs deeply into fundamental research to create entirely new products or processes.
Solutions within the realm of deep tech typically feature groundbreaking technology, long development times, high technical expertise, and significant potential for solving complex societal problems. Examples include AI, biotech, quantum computers, clean energy, advanced materials, and robotics.
UAS stands for Unmanned Aerial System
It is an umbrella term for unmanned aerial systems, including drones. It encompasses both the drone itself (the aircraft) and all the equipment needed to operate it, such as remote controls, sensors, and software.
The advantages of drones are numerous; they can reach difficult or dangerous locations, are often cheaper than manned flights, and can be deployed quickly for various missions. There are strict regulations governing the use of UAS in Sweden.
