Sweden enters the space defense era: Expando’s role in military satellite advancements

Sweden has taken a significant step forward in strengthening its defense capabilities. By launching its first military satellite, Gna-3 in to space. As Sweden continues to expand its presence in space, reliable and resilient space-grade electronic components are crucial. At Expando, we are proud to supply and support both military and civilian space projects with space-grade components. Radiation hardened components such as power supply, memory, computer core and space cameras, ensure the highest level of performance in extreme environments.

The rise of Swedish military satellites

On August 16, 2024, Sweden’s Armed Forces quietly launched Gna-3, a 4-kilogram cubesat, from a base in California, USA. The satellite, named after the messenger goddess Gna from Norse mythology, is designed to enhance Sweden’s strategic defense position. According to Swedish Defense Minister P?l Jonson, this initiative is part of a broader effort. To strengthen Sweden’s security and reduce reliance on foreign communication and intelligence.

With Esrange as a unique launch site and our strategic location, Sweden has an opportunity to play a critical role in space defense,” Jonson stated. “By developing our own military satellite capabilities, we gain independence and strengthen our ability to secure national interests.”

How Gna-3 works

Gna-3 orbits Earth at approximately 500 kilometers altitude, moving at 27,000 km/h. It passes over Sweden and the Baltic Sea four times a day, contributing the military to stay informed and communicate securely.

The satellite is equipped with advanced communication systems that let Sweden’s Armed Forces send encrypted messages without needing foreign networks. By continuously monitoring designated areas, Gna-3 can send important information to help military leaders understand threats and respond quickly.

Sweden plans to launch more satellites in 2025 and 2027, with full operation expected by 2030. These satellites will work together to create a stronger and more reliable space communication system, giving Sweden greater independence in space.

Expando’s contribution to space resilience

Expando has been a trusted partner in the space, aerospace, and defense industries since 2000. With extensive expertise in supplying high-reliability, space-grade components for defense, we play a crucial role in ensuring that satellites and other space assets operate effectively in the harsh conditions of space.

“Space technology demands components that can withstand extreme radiation, temperature fluctuations, and mechanical stress. Our expertise in rad-hard solutions makes us a valuable contributor to ongoing space programs.” says G?ran ?strand, founder of Expando.

“While we cannot disclose specific projects due to confidentiality, we are proud to support the advancement of defense initiatives in space.”

The components are specifically used in a wide range of applications including military satellites, deep-space exploration, and critical aerospace systems. By collaborating with top-tier space agencies and defense organizations, we ensure that mission-critical hardware remains reliable under the most challenging conditions.

The future of space defense and technology

There is a massive increase in the number of satellites being launched into orbit. While the past decade saw an average of 380 satellites launched per year, the coming years will bring an increase. The numbers are expected to skyrocket to around 1,700 per year. This rapid increase in satellite deployments is primarily driven by the growing need for surveillance, communication, and defense systems in space. Sweden is keeping up by investing in military satellites. These satellites help secure communication and gather important information from space, which is crucial in modern defense. With more launches planned, Sweden is working to become an important part of the global space industry. Expando remains committed to delivering high-quality, space-grade components for defense and aerospace organizations worldwide.

By leveraging our expertise, Expando continues to be a vital contributor to the advancement of space technologies.
