Sweater Consumption & Costing Calculation

Fully fashioned garments !! Widely known as sweater. Whenever it comes to the matter of withstanding the extreme cool weather, sweater can be our one stop solution. As an apparel merchandiser it's very interesting to calculate the consumption of sweater. And, calculating the consumption and doing costing for sweater one of the easiest thing too. It is also different from consumption calculation & costing for knit, woven products as well. Because, the sweater itself is not produced from any finished fabric. Using V-Bed Flat Knitting Machine, sweater panel is made. Then those panels are linked with each other.

Today, we will try to understand how to calculate the consumption of a sweater also learn to do the costing as well.

Consumption Calculation:

For consumption calculation & doing costing of a sweater, we need to make a sample at first. Definitely, we will do the sampling as per buyer requirement following the buyer's sample. Then, we will do weight measurement of sweater sample & multiply it with 12 to get the full consumption in dozen.

Costing:

For doing the costing of sweater we must keep following factors in our mind. They are;

1. Weight of the sweater, lbs./dozen

2. Yarn price

3. Accessories Price

4. Embellishment Cost

5. CM

6. Washing Cost

7. Commercial Charge

8. Profit

Now, very important thing want to share with you, CM (Cost of making). This CM for sweater depends on design, season and lots of other factors. Usually, there are 2 season in a year for sweater making.

1. Pick Season: (February - August): CM ranges from $4.00/dozen - $60.00/dozen
2. Off-Pick Season: (September - January): CM ranges from $12.00/dozen - $20.00/dozen

Formula we will use;

• For consumption (lbs./dozen)= (Sweater weight X 12) + wastage%
• For costing=

(Consumption X Yarn Price) + Accessories Cost + Embellishment Cost + CM + Washing Cost + Commercial Charge

Practice:

Let's say, a sweater sample's,

Weight: 306 gm, Yarn Cost: $1.76/lb., Accessories Cost: $4.00/dozen, Washing Cost: $4.00/dozen, CM: $39.5/dozen, Embroidery Cost: $3.00/dozen, Commercial Charge: $2.00/dozen.

Now, we have to calculate the both consumption & costing in dozen.

Solution:

Here, Sweater Weight is; 306 gm = 0.67 lb. (Converting the weight from gm to lb.)

Consumption= (Sweater weight X 12) + wastage% = (0.67 X 12) + 12%

= 8.04 + (8.04 X 12%) = 9 lbs./dozen

So, here the total yarn consumption for sweater will be 9 lbs./dozen

Costing= (Consumption X Yarn Price) + Accessories Cost + Embellishment Cost + CM + Washing Cost + Commercial Charge

= (9 X 1.76) + 4 + 3 + 39.5 + 4 + 2 = $68.34/dozen

Upon that total cost buying house keeps a certain percentage of service charge which is known as LSC. For our understanding, 5% is kept as service charge. So,

Actual total cost will be= 68.34 + (68.34 X 5%) = $71.76/dozen

Now, the price for 1 pcs of sweater garment will be= $71.76 / 12 = $5.98/Pcs

So, that's how we will be able to calculate the consumption & costing for sweater.
