Sweat Your Way to a Healthier Winter

Sweat Your Way to a Healthier Winter

When cooler temperatures set in, it's tempting to avoid exercise and stay indoors. But getting out in the chill to work up a sweat has remarkable benefits for the body and mind. Lower temperatures offer different opportunities to be active.

The human body has built-in sweat glands that promote health through perspiration - yes, even during the winter! As sweat evaporates from skin, it provides a cooling sensation that regulates body temperature. This natural cooling system works year-round.

Full-Body Detoxification

Sweating during exercise helps move toxins and waste out of the body. Training out in cooler weather increases blood and lymph circulation to distribute nutrients and eliminate harmful buildups of cholesterol, salt, and other toxins. This increased circulation and sweating provides a cleansing detox for the entire body.

All-Season Temperature Control

As sweat evaporates from the skin, it results in a cooling effect that helps maintain the right body temperature. Physical activity in the winter increases heat production. The autopilot features within our bodies?adjust the internal thermostats to?keep body temperature in a healthy range.

Better Immune Function and Healing

Training in the winter can also help to improve natural immunity. The increase in circulation, heart rate and sweat production prepares the immune system to ward off illnesses. Being more active, eating whole foods, and getting adequate sleep decrease the chances of getting sick. Sweating also helps heal wounds faster by releasing moisture that regenerates skin cells. This ability may gradually decrease as we age. Besides the physical perks, training in the colder months can provide mental health benefits too. I always get a sense of accomplishment after?completing a challenging run or other outdoor activity.

While hibernating in the winter may seem tempting, I refuse to let the lower mercury deter me no?matter?where I'm at. I make sure to stay hydrated, wear as many layers as necessary, and wear the appropriate winter gear (gloves, hat, shoes, etc.)

Here's?to a safe and healthy year!

Best of health,

Will
