Sweat the Sprouts - The Cabbages Will Sort Themselves

Sweat the Sprouts - The Cabbages Will Sort Themselves

Achieving your goals?(cabbages) with small steps, routines and habits (sprouts)

In most of my posts I mention cabbages or sprouts or both.?Why??Well tomorrow I’ll share a video that gives the foundation to it, but today, I’ll explain…

Over the years, as a speaker on the subject of wellbeing, stress and resilience, I have come to be known as the Cabbage Man’ or ’Sprout Guy.’?I think I prefer the latter to be honest ;0.

The reason is that in managing stress, emotional overwhelm and seemingly insurmountable demands (cabbages), the most effective way to manage both our own state and deal with the cabbages, is to:

1. Create some time and Space in which to simmer down

2. Recognise the cabbages (the big and important stuff) from the Sprouts (the small and trivial)

3. Identify those cabbages - ‘know thy cabbages')

4.?Identify the most smelly one, i.e. the one that most needs your urgent attention and that you are most likely procrastinating over and get to…

5. Slicing and Dicing that Cabbage into Sprout sized chunks.

6. Then get sweating those sprouts and not the trivial and unimportant sprouts identified in point 2.

7.?Make time for self-care - nurture your inner RADISH.

Ok, that sounds simple, but simple doesn’t mean easy. We do need to give ourselves 'permission to be human.'?But, it is useful to ask ourselves at any given time, ‘am I sweating the right sprouts?’?In other words, 'is my head where it needs to be at this particular time?'?If not, let’s get to work getting it onto the stuff it needs to focus on and if so, then keep sweating those sprouts.

The reasons, now that I am coaching mid-lifers in regaining their health and control over their own weight, that I bang on about sweating the sprouts are:

a. Their lives are often full-on enough already without adding in some huge action plan.

b. The sprouts are where real change occurs - intruding small habits over time, embedding them (sweating those sprout-sized habits) and building on them.

c.?Dealing with setbacks and emotional overwhelm and ‘self-cabotage’ as I call it (the negative self-talk) comes down to sorting your cabbages from your sprouts, and working through points 1 to 7 above, whilst dealing with the self-cabotage in a way that includes self-compassion.

d.?It’s all sprouts! Every event, demand, project, mindset challenge can be faced by breaking it into sprout-sized chunks.

So, that said;

Focus on the Sprouts (the habits) and the Cabbages (the Goal) will take care of themselves.

And consider that - the work of your life, in order to achieve the biggest goals of your life.

And if you feel you need a bit of support along the way, give me, your Chief Sprout Sweater and fellow Restless MidLifer a shout and I’d be delighted to have a chat with you about my work.

At first, I thought this was funny but as I continued to read I understood your perspective and actually enjoyed and agreed with you. I like this quote the most, 'Focus on the Sprouts (the habits) and the Cabbages (the Goal) will take care of themselves. Thank you for sharing. Oooh, waiting for the video.

Love this analogy Dave Algeo. A great way of looking at it for sure. "Focus on the Sprouts (the habits) and the Cabbages (the Goal) will take care of themselves." Great line.

I've read "Eat That Frog", Dave. Perhaps it is now time for "Eat Those Sprouts". We could employ your analogy to what we do with Google Ads. The important things may appear small and insignificant, but they are what get you to where you want to be.
