This is a fascinating article and fun to read and let your mind wander. https://www.roboticsbusinessreview.com/research/swarm-robots-get-smarter-academic-research/?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=weekly_roundup&eid=399007812&bid=2117904
When I first saw it, I thought of the movie "Minority Report" and the little spider robots scanning people's eyes for identification. Then I thought of the Olympics with the swarm of drones forming athletes. The reality is the technology is really interesting. As with all networks, it dives deep and head on into the methodology for centralized or distributed control. There are clear benefits and draw downs to both approaches.
If you want a home project to see how easy it is to link robotic systems together, try a cluster of Raspberry Pi computers. There are several examples on YouTube. I clustered 3 RPis together making one system with 12 processors and 3 Gig of RAM. It knocked out the computation of prime numbers from 0 - 10,000 in well under a minute. Each machine can process individual work or combine efforts to solve a hard problem.
