New partnership will shed light on the adverse effects of climate change on outdoor winter sports
OTTAWA, ONTARIO – A new multi-year partnership between Speed Skating Canada and carbon capture and removal solutions provider, Svante Technologies Inc., will highlight the adverse impact of global warming on winter sports and encourage Canadians to take action against climate change to help ensure the long-term viability of outdoor speed skating across the country.
Based in Vancouver, Svante manufactures filters and modular carbon capture machines that trap and remove CO2 from industrial emissions and the air. This is known as “carbon management” or “CCUS” (carbon capture, use and storage) in which captured CO2 is transported safely and permanently stored deep underground to remove it from the atmosphere. As a trailblazer in this important field, Svante’s purpose is to create world-changing solutions that address climate change and accelerate the global transition to carbon neutrality.
Through their unique partnership, Svante and Speed Skating Canada, the national governing body for Canada’s most successful Olympic sport, will collaborate on a digital marketing campaign to shed light on the existential threat climate change presents to outdoor speed skating and emphasize the urgency for action.

“As climate change continues to disrupt our environment, it poses significant challenges to outdoor sports like speed skating, jeopardizing both the sport itself and the natural ice surfaces it depends on. In the early 80s, international long track speed skating competitions were held outdoors. Today, in part because the impacts of climate change, the races are held indoors. We believe that by educating Canadians about these threats and highlighting the importance of preserving these environments, we can inspire individuals, communities, and policymakers to take proactive measures against climate change.” - Joe Morissette , Chief Executive Officer of Speed Skating Canada
“Svante and Speed Skating Canada share a common interest in accelerating the adoption of carbon management solutions for a cleaner, more sustainable future. The ludicrous speed of our company’s scaleup of carbon capture and removal solutions and the environment in which speed skating is practiced make Speed Skating Canada and Svante natural partners. The environment growing less hospitable to the longstanding Canadian tradition of speed skating is just one example of how climate change impacts us on a personal level. Our partnership with Speed Skating Canada aims to illustrate this reality and increase awareness of and support for climate solutions, like Svante’s, that chart a path forward.” - Claude Letourneau, ICD.D , President and Chief Executive Officer of Svante
As part of this collaboration, Svante will give back to the speed skating community through support for the revitalization of Speed Skating Canada’s Hall of Fame display at the Olympic Oval in Calgary. The organization’s commitment to re-building this space, which highlights the trailblazing athletes, coaches, and builders of world-class Canadian champions that have contributed to the sport’s success, supports continuous inspiration for generations to come.
“We are excited to kick off this new partnership with Svante. Their company is doing important work to tackle climate change, and we believe that, as Canadian leaders, we can work together to raise awareness and encourage action. We also look forward to collaborating with Svante to implement sustainable practices that reduce our organization’s carbon footprint and help us move towards a greener future.” - Joe Morissette , Chief Executive Officer of Speed Skating Canada
