SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORTATION CHALLENGES AND SOLUTIONS
By Erick Wessels, Sales Director, RS South Africa
The transportation sector is one of the fastest-growing contributors to global greenhouse gas emissions, responsible for 30% of global energy demand and 23% of direct CO2 emissions in 2019.
Road transport, particularly freight, is a major source of these emissions, with the global vehicle fleet expected to more than double by 2050, including a large number of older, polluting vehicles in regions such as Africa and Latin America.?
Public transport is essential for reducing emissions and congestion. Buses, trains, and trams significantly cut carbon footprints compared to private vehicles. Hybrid and electric buses, along with better urban planning, further enhance sustainability.
Moreover, public transport vehicles are designed for maximum capacity and fuel efficiency. Innovations such as hybrid and electric buses further reduce fuel consumption and pollution levels. Encouraging the use of public transport can also ease traffic congestion in cities, improving traffic flow and reducing commute times.
For sectors where electrification is not viable, such as aviation and shipping, alternative fuels like biofuels, hydrogen, and ammonia offer potential solutions. These fuels, when produced sustainably, can reduce emissions and dependence on fossil fuels.?
South Africa’s automotive industry, a key contributor to its economy, must adapt to global EV trends to remain competitive. With Europe phasing out internal combustion engines by 2035, South Africa must transition its manufacturing and supply chains to sustain vehicle exports. The country’s Electric Vehicle Roadmap aims to address energy challenges and support the shift to clean mobility.?
RS provides innovative products and solutions to help industries transition to sustainable transport. The company integrates environmental, social, and governance principles into its strategy, with a 2030 sustainability plan focused on reducing carbon footprints, fostering innovation, and operating responsibly.?
