Sustainable shelves : How shelf-automation helps stores reduce food waste ?

Local research conducted with collaborating retailers revealed that, on average across their multiple stores, 23-24% of food expiration waste originates from the presence of mixed expiry dates on shelves. Customer behaviour analysis demonstrates a strong preference for items with later expiration dates, resulting in an accumulation of sooner-to-expire products that ultimately become waste.

However, "if a retailer strictly brings later-to-expire units out only when all the sooner-to-expire units are sold, then it risks turning a consumer away," said Nitish Jain, Associate Professor of Management Science and Operations at London Business School. He further emphasizes that the psychological impact of near-empty shelves, coupled with individual consumer consumption patterns and the availability of alternative stores, can all deter customers.

Full facings with less stock

This research highlights a significant challenge for retailers: balancing the need to avoid overstocking and minimise waste due to mixed expiry dates with the need to maintain a full and inviting shelf. By leveraging shelf automation solutions, retailers can effectively address this challenge.

Automated fronting maintains a consistently full and appealing shelf appearance, enhancing the customer experience and avoiding sales losses associated with perceived out-of-stock products. Furthermore, shelf automation facilitates a first-in, first-out (FIFO) inventory flow, minimising the risk of product expiration and subsequent waste.

No one can resist chocolate, can we?

Apart from food waste caused by expiration, damaged products on the shelf are another significant contributor to waste. We have spent years developing and continuously improving our chocolate solutions, as we've heard the common challenges among retailers that block chocolate is one of the most vulnerable but bestselling products on their shelves.

Prioritise prominent chocolate displays to attract shoppers' attention and stimulate their appetite, while reducing damage. Our Choco-pusher trays are specifically designed for block chocolate, ensuring proper product merchandising and minimising the risk of damage during restocking.
