Welcome! We have a busy week coming up. If you're in Austin next week, we hope you can join us for our first Climate Conversations in-person gathering on January 24, 2023 at Central Machine Works in Austin, Texas. Then on January 25, 2023 is our webinar, titled Want to Achieve Net-Zero by 2040? Learn Your 2023 Action Items. Register here or RSVP on LinkedIn .
In this edition of Sustainable Progress, we shed light on the carbon credit buying process by sharing the differences between our CarbonBetter Carbon Offset (CBCO) Portfolios and our bespoke carbon offset sourcing service, including reasons to choose one over the other. We also share steps you can take today to start preparing, if your organization is within scope of the CSRD's upcoming requirements for some United States (US) based businesses operating in the European Union (EU).
Here's the latest news and upcoming events from the past two weeks:
NEWS
The process of buying carbon credits can get confusing fast. When you take into account specific requirements or goals for geography, vintage, co-benefits, technology, and project diversity, the process can seem daunting. If you’re lucky, you might find all of the projects you need to meet your organization’s goals listed on one registry at an acceptable price. It's more likely, though, that you will find yourself tracking multiple registries and emailing and calling back and forth with project developers and/or brokers to follow up about various projects and their latest prices. We felt this process needed to be simpler, more transparent, and more accessible, so we did something about it.
The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) is a common reporting framework that will require nearly 50,000 companies operating in the European Union (EU) to disclose the impact of their corporate activities on the environment and society. This is one of three rules that make up the EU’s sustainability reporting framework, alongside the Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation (SFDR) and the EU Taxonomy. The CSRD replaces the Non-Financial Reporting Directive (NFRD), requiring more stringent reporting by more companies with assurance provided by third-party audits. The European Financial Reporting Advisory Group (EFRAG) is working on a final draft of the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS) that will inform further obligations under the CSRD, with an expected due date in June 2023.
