Voluntary Carbon Market Clarity: Making Sense of the Trends Webinar Recap

By Chris Sylvester , Senior Marketing Operations Specialist

In our recent webinar titled “Voluntary Carbon Market Clarity: Making Sense of the Trends,” we dove into the depths of the voluntary carbon market (VCM), a crucial yet complex tool in global carbon emission reduction and removal efforts. This webinar was designed for decision-makers grappling with the VCM’s intricacies and provided a detailed overview of the market’s current state, characterized by its volatility and the urgent need for transparency and technical understanding. The webinar was moderated by Tori Chen, Climate Analyst at CarbonBetter, who was joined by industry experts including Nicole Sullivan, Director of Climate Services at CarbonBetter, Dominic Sung, Director of Business Development at CarbonBetter, and David Moffat, Managing Director at Inlandsis. Topics included the types and roles of market participants, the evaluation criteria for quality carbon credits, the nuanced debate around removals versus avoidance credits (spoiler alert: both removals and avoidance credits are important!), and strategic considerations for using and purchasing carbon credits. Below is the full replay of the webinar.

What I Learned at Sustainable Brands 23 (SB’23) and VERGE 23

By Dominic Sung , Director of Business Development

Attending conferences always brings a mixed bag of emotions for me. It’s great to see familiar industry folks, to connect with lots of new companies and ideas, and to discuss what is on the horizon for sustainability, but logistics can be tricky and the time away from family is a commitment. I spent 7 of 10 working days in back to back weeks attending Sustainable Brands 23 (SB’23) and VERGE 23, and while this stint was a similar mix of complicated logistics and engaging interactions, upon reflection, it brought me squarely back to why I chose to work in sustainability and decarbonization along with the core values and beliefs we have for our Climate Services team here at CarbonBetter. It was encouraging and validating to have these things align with so many at these conferences.

Local Law 97: New York City’s Building Emissions Legislation

By Dominic Sung , Director of Business Development

In September 2023, New York City (NYC) Mayor Eric Adams announced the “Getting 97 Done” initiative, a four-part strategy to reduce carbon emissions from the city’s large buildings in line with Local Law 97, which was enacted in 2019 as part of the city’s Climate Mobilization Act. This initiative focuses on four main areas: securing various financing options for building upgrades, offering technical guidance through the NYC Accelerator, enforcing compliance through a New York City Department of Buildings (DOB) rule package, and partnering with New York State to decarbonize central systems. Local Law 97 aims to significantly reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from NYC’s approximately 50,000 large buildings. It requires buildings over 25,000 square feet to meet strict emissions limits, targeting a 40% reduction by 2030 and 80% by 2050. Building owners must submit annual emissions reports starting in 2024, and there are penalties for not meeting the standards. In this blog post, we’ll break down who’s affected by this Local Law 97, as well as what you need to know and what you need to do to prepare for the law.

Last year, Nicole Sullivan, our Director of Climate Services, got the chance to sit down with Dan Linsky from ClimeCo and Julius Pasay from The Climate Trust, two leaders in the carbon offset project development space, to discuss efforts to close the current supply gap in the carbon market and the challenges in developing projects and issuing credits at scale. Below are some highlights from the conversation—but don’t miss the full replay for more insights.
