Sustainable Packaging Newsletter (Edition 48) SPC New Orleans
sThese last two weeks have been full of packaging excitement! Including an award winning experience for Orora Packaging Solutions and Chris Bradley and our whole team at the Sustainable Packaging Coalition (SPC) . And then I got to be the keynote speaker at Pack Jam 2024 in Wisconsin at University of Wisconsin-Stout and then I got to tour the 3M 公司 innovation lab and more! I'll discuss these last two in greater detail next week (edition 49)
PODCAST OF THE WEEK: In this interview with Chris Bradley from Orora Packaging Solutions we discuss the new award winning reusable packaging system he invented with his team called Jarbot (pronounced JarBow)
This journey has been years in the making for this inventor (Chris) and his team at Orora. Thank you again for including me in this process
Paul Nowak and Chris Bradley and Cory Connors ???? and Olga Kachook with the Sustainable Packaging Coalition (SPC) Innovator Award for the Orora Packaging Solutions Jarbot reusable packaging system.
So very exciting and an amazing accomplishment! This award is sponsored by Trayak
Thomas Pollock and Shannon Moore and Marcu Alexander on their panel discussion titled: Connecting the packaging value chain for successful goals implementation . They discussed a wide variety of questions and topics including how "How to push our suppliers for Scope 3 help and progress". And SB54 California's EPR law which will require all packaging to be recyclable.
I appreciated their point about how food waste must be taken into consideration before implementing new packaging ideas. Also, my favorite line "Pre Competition Collaboration" This is how we can all work together even as competitors to make this world a more sustainable place.
Two more key points by these amazing people:
Something New This Year at SPC was interactive labs with some great companies including Lorax EPI and Specright and Trayak
This presentation was full of great tips about how to organize your data to be ready for EPR reporting. I highly recommend reaching out to Michelle Carvell and Lydia Geddes from Lorax EPI if you have any concerns about your EPR compliance, they are truly the experts.
This panel with Amy M. and Matthew Swenson and Olga Kachook was really impressive. These two companies have very different markets and ways of helping their customers so they need to tackle sustainability very differently.
LUSH has chose to go "naked" or without packaging where possible in their retail stores and it was very impressive how they have minimized all of their packaging. They even make their own starch based peanuts that are water soluble!
Sell on Amazon was represented by Matthew Swenson and I'm truly impressed with him again. He discussed how SIPP (Ships In Product Packaging) is replacing SIOC (Ships In Own Container) and how right sizing packaging has reduced packaging by 30% with their new Compact By Design program.
The Specright interactive lab was a very insightful 45 minutes and even with a struggling WiFi system they were able to present great information. Is your data ready for Scope or EPR reporting? Specright can help!
