Above was a whatsapp message from a customer…which he also sent by email later.
I was amused as to what really is sustainable in this inquiry…
“Sustainable Leather”…well, let’s explore “sustainable” here.
Leather that came from lambs that sustained…? ( sustained what ? )
Leather that came from non toxic chemicals..? ( great ! )
Leather that is a natural product…? ( only leather is natural product..PU is not )
Leather that came from animals that were not killed ? ( well well well…! )
Leather that came from animals not killed cruelly ( Amen ! )
Leather that came from a vegetarian animal..? ( Yeah Sure ! )
Leather that is biodegradable…? ( yeah it sure is )
Leather that is a by product of meat industry…? ( By all means yes it is )
Pheww..enough of contemplation…and still I could not gather what exactly is sustainable leather or fashion.
But AHa!…If I supplied stretch leather pants @ Euro 65, then for sure I would not have been able to sustain ! The workers involved in the entire production process would not have been able to sustain. If this continued for other styles / products too…the entire factory can’t sustain…it could lead to closure…loss of jobs for workers, cutting corners to pay the leather supplier etc etc etc OR, in order to sustain,..using lower quality leather, submaterial etc in the next production – making a bad product that could harm the end user ; avoiding SEDEX/BSCI compliance costs, cutting cost corners at every possible end and end up making really bad quality products in the end, that too with bad workmanship. NOW, is that sustainable..?
Well who is going to answer that…Not the customer who asked for a stretch pant @ 65 Euro for sure !
