Sustainable Design Principles

As a practicing architect, I was recently invited by the staff of the Heriott-Watt University (Dubai Campus) to talk about sustainable design principles & their applications to projects within the region.
The lecture was directed at the school of architecture/interior design. Students in attendance varied from year 01-04. The synopsis of the lecture was to address key sustainable design principles used within the region, both traditionally & in modern construction.
The focus was predominantly on the methodology for reducing heat gain, which in turn reduces HVAC load, which in turn reduces energy consumption. Given that around 50% of a buildings energy consumption in the UAE, goes directly towards HVAC & lighting, it seemed only appropriate to target that specific problem area.
Along with locally available case studies, the students were able to visually relate the principles discussed & their application. It was made clear that these principles, if used as a design factor rather than a checklist, can actually add a new dimension of character to your space. In some cases, they can even go on to be the main design feature of your entire project.
An inter-active student audience converted the Q&A session, post-lecture, into a platform for critique, analysis & debate. Current industry standards were challenged on their validity, practicality & most importantly, their efficiency. Overall, the experience was enlightening for both myself & the students. This event, also served as an eye opener on the importance of bridging the gap between the design studio & professional practice.
